William Alfred Hamilton born 19 Mar 1824 fourth son of the Henry Hamilton of Tullylaoise,
Co Down and the grandson of Rt Rev Hugh Hamilton, Lord Bishop of Ossory. He was educated
Shrewsbury Grammar School and graduated Trinity College Dublin, BA in 1846 and DD in 1877.
He married Henrietta Katherine Cole on 10 Jan 1849 at Mellifont Church, Tullyallen, Louth.
Henrietta was the third daughter of Henry St George Cole of Annestown, Waterford. They
lived at Taney Glebe and had nine children. William was rector of Taney from 1867 until 1895
when he retired. He was a canon of Christ Church, Dublin from 1878 to 1893 and a rural dean.
He died at Mopoon on 13 Feb 1897 and was buried at Taney. A marble monument in his
memory was erected at Taney Church in August 1897. Henrietta died 29 Sep 1897 and was
buried with her husband.
1 Rev Henry Balfour Hamilton born 18.12.1849 married Hannah Sophia Moore daughter
of Canon John Hubert Moore of Taney on 24.08.1875 at Taney Church. Henry died on
26.05.1932 of the Rectory, Normanton-on-Soar, Nottinghamshire. Hannah died on
05.06.1933 at White Lodge, Ruddington Hall.
2 Alfred St George Hamilton born 05.12.1851 married Emily Caroline Atkinson of
Meadowbrook and daughter of the late Richard Atkinson of Gortmore on 24.11.1896 at
St Patricks Cathedral. Richard Orpen designed a house for them on Westminster Road
in 1900. Alfred died on 18.10.1932 aged 80 years late of 79 Palmerstown Park, Dublin.
3 Gertrude May Hamilton eldest daughter born 29.04.1853 married Erskine Wilmot Chetwode
2nd son of Edward Wilmot Chetwode of Woodbrook, Queens County on 01.09.1875 at St
James’, Bangor. Erskine Wilmot-Chetwode died on 01.04.1886 aged 33 years at New
Orleans. Gertrude then married Rev Edward Newburn Walker on 13.03.1890 at Taney
Church, Dundrum.
4 Florence Eglantine Hamilton born 29.04.1853 married Francis Elrington Ball son of the Rt
Hon John Thomas Ball on 09.12.1897 at Christ Church Taney, Dundrum. Florence died on
28.08.1913 at Booterstown. Francis died on 07.01.1928 at Fitzwilliam Nursing Home,
Pembroke Street, Dublin.
5 Catherine Henrietta Hamilton youngest daughter born 04.05.1858 married Robert Pollock
Hamilton youngest son of Alexander Hamilton of Inistioge, Kilkenny on 28.10.1886 at Taney
Church. Robert died 10.06.1907 at Haywood, Greystones and Catherine died on 27.04.1922
at St Edmundsbury Hospital, Lucan and they are buried at St Nahi’s Churchyard in Dundrum.
6 William Drummond (Drummie) Hamilton, third son born 04.08.1859 of Taney Glebe was
educated at Haileybury and Oxford. He played cricket for Leinster and also played lawn tennis
and golf at a high level. He married Alice Josephine Kinahan daughter of George Kinahan and
Margaret Dickinson of Roebuck Park on 05.08.1891 at Taney Church. They moved to Ramelton,
County Donegal where Drummie was a land agent, before moving to Norham Road in Oxford.
William died 04.03.1914 at Oxford and was buried at St Nahi’s Churchyard, Dundrum. He left
his personal estate of nearly 4K to his wife.

7 Willoughby James Hamilton 4th son born 09.12.1864 at Monasterevin, Co Kildare married
Sophia Jane Thompson 3rd daughter of Charles Thompson of Herbert Hill, Dundrum on
31.05.1894 at Taney Church. Willoughby known as 'the ghost' was a tennis, badminton
and soccer player. He was capped for Ireland in Association football and won the Wimbledon
men's singles in 1890, the first Irishman to win the title. He did not defend his title the
following year as he contracted blood poisoning in January 1891 and for months his life was
touch and go. He was a stockbroker and in later life he played badminton winning the Irish
doubles championship with his brother Blaney in 1902. He was also a competitive golf player.
They lived at Sydenham House, Dundrum and the couple had no children. Willoughby died
27.09.1943 aged 78 years at Sydenham House, Dundrum. Sophia died at a Dublin nursing
home on 01.02.1951 aged 87 late of 2 Sydenham Place.
8 Francis Cole Lowry Hamilton born 26.04.1869 at Dundrum. He played cricket for Dundrum
and Leinster and was capped for Ireland in 1888. He graduated from the University of
Durham in 1889 and the Theological College in Wells in 1893. He took Holy orders and
married Maria Georgina (Minna) Kinahan, daughter of George Kinahan and Margaret
Dickinson of Roebuck on 28.04.1898 at Taney Church. Francis was rector of Norteden and later
a canon of Chester. The couple had no children. Francis died 16.12.1936 at Craigmore,
Greystones, Wicklow.
9 Blayney Balfour (Bud) Hamilton youngest son born 13.06.1872 at Taney Glebe married Irene
Kirkwood Long, youngest daughter of James Long, JP, Commissary General of Manor House,
Dundrum on 01.06.1898 at Taney Church, Dundrum. Bud was an international cricket player
and was capped nineteen times for Ireland. He also received a cap for Hockey and was an
international tennis player. He was an auctioneer and the family lived at Lakelands, Kilmacud
together with General & Mrs Long. They later lived at Bettyville, Raheny and Lake Park House,
Roundwood. Irene died on 25 Jul 1942 and Blayney died 23.01.1946 at Cork Street Hospital,
late of Dundrum Castle.

2 Arthur Hamilton born 29.01.1905 at Lakelands, Kilmacud was an international tennis
and badminton player. He won three Scottish Open titles and the 1932 Welsh
International title in the doubles in Badminton. He was a stockbroker and married
Georgina Perry Garratt at the Mariner's Church, Kingstown on 16 Apr 1936. Georgina
was the daughter of Dr Joseph R Garratt of Mount Adelaide, Kingstown. They lived
at Monatrea, Churchtown and had children.
3 Willoughby (Rat) Hamilton born 27.10.1907 at Lakelands, Kilmacud was an international
tennis and badminton player. He won five Irish Open titles, including four singles from
1929 to 1934. In also won seven Scottish Open titles and five Welsh International titles.
Willoughby was living at Bettyville, Raheny married Mary Patricia (Molly) Spratt on
31 May 1935 at Dunboyne R C Church. Molly was a noted Dublin tennis player and the
daughter of Gerald Spratt of Melfont, Shrewsbury Road. Willoughby was a auctioneer
and died 20 24 Feb 197 at The Mill House, Kilbride, Dunganstown.
4 Mavis Henrietta Irene Hamilton born 14.09.1911 at Lakelands, Kilmacud was an
international tennis and badminton player. She won three Scottish Open titles and four
Irish Open titles in Badminton. Mavis of Bettyville, Raheny married James Andrew
MacNaughton on 12 Apr 1934 at Taney Church. James was a merchant and the son of
Alfred Mack McNaughton, a company director. They lived at Roebuck Mount, Dundrum
where Mavis died 11 Nov 1958.
