Frankfort Castle
NAME Frankfort/Frankfort House/Frankford Lodge/Frankfort Castle
AREA LOCATION Frankfort Court, Dundrum off Upper Churchtown Road
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838-1845 and 1888-1913 place it in the townland of Churchtown
Lower and it is annotated as Frankford Lodge and Frankfort Castle on
1888-1913 map. The structure is also depicted on Taylor's 1816 and Duncan's
1821 and is annotated at Frankfort Lodge.
GENERAL For sale on 12 acres in 1809, it was described as a beautiful Villa between Milltown
and Dundrum. It had a dining room, drawing room and five bed chambers. There were stables, a
coach house, a dairy and offices. It had a small river running through the demesne and a fishpond in
one of the gardens. By 1824 it was in the centre of a ring fence on 21 acres with a trout stream running
through the centre of the lawn and it had a porter's lodge. At this time it was called Frankfort Lodge.
By 1859, a new house had been built on the site, a ten bay, two storey castellated residence with turrets
at each corner, with a coach house and gate lodge to Dundrum Road known as Frankfort Castle. It was
for sale in 1863. There are two distinct houses on the site by 1901 and Fanny Jane Wright was the owner of
both properties along with three 2 roomed cottages on the grounds.
It has been remodelled over the years, it has two doors located below a projection (to accommodate
the dividing of the house) with a pair of lancet windows in the centre of the house. In 1933 it was
divided into two semi-detached houses as 1 & 2 Frankfort Castle and No 1 was for sale with pretty
pleasure grounds and a lovely garden and garage.
A derelict two-storey, three-bay building on the site, overgrown with shrubbery may be the old hunting
lodge or a converted coach house, known as Frankfort Lodge which was sold for £3700 in 1948.
YEAR BUILT Original hunting lodge circa 1800, new build circa 1858.
VALUATION In 1865 the valuation was 155 pounds and in the 1901 census it is noted as
having 10 rooms occupied by family.
ARCHITECT 1850s build is possibly by Murray, architect & the builder was John Meighen
(Meehan) who sued Arthur Baker for an unpaid in account in relation to the
'rebuilding' of Frankfort Castle.
