Campfield House
NAME Big Campfield/Campfield House
AREA LOCATION Drummartin, directly behind Campfield Terrace on the upper Kilmacud Road,
now the site of Birchfield Avenue behind the carpark of The Goat.
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838-1845 and 1898-1913 place it in the townland of Drummartin
and it is annotated as Campfield House on both, it also appears on Taylors map
of 1816.
GENERAL A late petite Georgian House, two storey over basement, Big Campfield sat on
10 acres, similar in appearance to Drummartin House, at one time both houses were even painted
yellow. It had a weeping Willow to the front and a line of Chestnut trees to the rear, the weeping
willow fell in a storm in 1981 and the chestnuts were felled in 1985 just before the house was
demolished. It had a ironwork canopy and delicate gothic style Georgian windows. A very
symmetrical house, its two chimney stacks were directly above the front door with an intricate
fanlight. Its gatelodge was opposite Farmhill on Taney road now known as Taney Lodge. Furniture
from the house was sold in 1854 this was mainly by Messrs Jones of Stephen's Green (where the
young James Adam worked). The two ground floor reception rooms were in excess of 30' x 18.
