NAME The Demesne of Cottage/Priory & Priory Cottage
AREA LOCATION Upper Kilmacud Road, opposite St Raphael's School, now the site of Stillorgan
Wood and Stillorgan Heath.
MAP LOCATION OSI map of 1838-1845 place them in the townland of Kilmacud East and both are
annotated as Priory Cottage. By 1860 Priory is called Priory Cottage and the cottage
is unnamed. They appear to have been demolished by 1900. On Duncan 1821 and
Taylor 1816 it is named as Kilmacud Cottage.
GENERAL In 1847 Priory Kilmacud was described at a handsome villa residence and farm on
25 acres with outhouses and gardens. It had three reception rooms and five bedrooms. It had servants
apartments, a greenhouse and grapery. It also had a neat cottage (Priory Cottage) and gatelodge within
the grounds. It was described as 'adjoining Westbury' in 1858. On 26 acres in 1784 this may have been
known as the Demesne of Cottage or Gothick Cottage owned by Richard Thwaites.
