Ardmeen
NAME The Cottage, Newtown Park Cottage/Ardmeen
AREA LOCATION STILLORGAN, off Newtownpark Avenue
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838-1845 and 1898-1913 place it in the townland of
Galloping Green North and it is annotated as Newtown Park Cottage
and Ardmeen respectively.
GENERAL The house originally on 12 acres has been extended over the years, it had
a carriage drive and gatelodge. In 1923 it was described as commodious with 15 apartments,
numerous outbuildings, a coach house and stabling for three horses. A quaint, old style non
basement house held on a lease of 147 years from 1890, with a balcony running the entire
length. When the contents were put up for sale in 1869, they included valuable paintings by
Rembrandt, Rubens & Raphael. In 1889, an oak staircase and stained glass windows were
key selling points. The aspect of the house has been compromised by the loss of the
carriage drive.
Its gatelodge housed a school run by Sarah Markham pre 1837 which is now called Belclare,
it was also the meeting house of the Hibernia Temperance Society from 1839. In 1899
Fitzwilliam Tennis Club leased the property to host social events. In 1968 Merchant Banking
Ltd (Matthew Gallagher & Desmond Traynor) purchased the land, the house was sold and
sites were hived off for building.
YEAR BUILT circa 1808
VALUATION In 1912 the valuation was 89 pounds and in the 1901 census it is noted
as having 18 rooms occupied by family.
