James Henry Butt, son of Henry Hugh Butt, an accountant was born in Gloucester 18 Feb 1844. He
joined the Navy and was a Lieutenant in 1870. He married Alice Maude Lovell at St Paul’s Church,
Clifton on 27 Dec 1870. Alice was the daughter of John George Lovell, coal merchant. James was
retired with the rank of commander in the RN in 1873. In 1891 he was the organist at Gloucester
Cathedral where two of his children were choristers. His youngest son was born in Shanghai circa
1892.* James’ brother George William Butt worked at the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank so they
may have been on a visit to them. James was a founder member and Hon Treasurer of the St
Catherine’s and St John’s Churches War Savings Association. By 1902 they were living at Old Colwyn
Bay in North Wales. In later life James was quite a successful watercolourist and exhibited in both
Wales and London. He was awarded an additional pension of £75 pa in 1923. Agnes died on
6 Dec 1924 and James died 4 Jan 1936 at St Donat’s, Old Colwyn Bay.
1 Arthur Lovell Butt eldest son born 4 June 1872 in Devon. Arthur, a naval engineer died
on active service aboard the HMS 'Vulcan' in Salonica, Greece on 19 Sep1895.
2 Florence Lovell Butt baptised 8 Mar 1874 at Clifton in Bristol was a governess in 1891.
3 Hubert Lovell Butt, second son born circa 1875 in Gloucester was a bank official. He
married Agnes Player on 12 Jul 1904 at St Saviour’s Church, Bristol. Agnes was the third
daughter of J H Player.
4 Alice Lovell Butt born 20 Feb 1876 at Highgrove Villas, Gloucester.
5 Harry Lovell-Butt eldest son born 1877 in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England joined
the HMS Conway Training Ship in 1892. He was the recipient of the Viking’s Cup
presented by the king of Norway for saving a Norwegian crew. He married Maud Francis
Alieda Buchanan whilst on active service on 8 Jul 1916 at St Peter’s, Dublin. Maud was
the daughter of Col Harry John Buchanan of the third Battalion, Connaught Rangers and of
Prospect House in Westport. The couple had four children, one of whom was stillborn.
He joined the Belfast Ulster Steamship Company and was in command of the Torr when it
was torpedoed on 20 Apr 1917 160 miles of the Fastnet. The family lived at Ardmeen
from 1927. Harry took charge of the New Torr Head built by Harland and Wolff in 1937
Commander Lovell Butt, RD, RNR died 7 Jul 1938 at the Adelaide Hospital late of
Ardmeen, Newtownpark Avenue. His funeral service was held at All Saint’s Carysfort
Avenue and he was buried at Deansgrange. Maud moved to Belclare on Newtownpark
Avenue after his death and died 5 Dec 1973. She was buried with her husband at
Deansgrange.
1 Harry Francis Lovell Butt born 25 May 1918 at 3 Kenilworth Road. He joined the
army and was a 2nd Lieutenant in the RASC in 1945. He married Molly Audrey
Alsop at St Giles’s Church, Northampton in April 1946. Molly was the elder
daughter of F J Alsop of Northampton. He attained the rank of major was awarded
an MBE in 1965.
2 Richard George Lovell Butt born 25 June 1920 at 3 Kenilworth Road was transport
manager for the Belfast Telegraph and later proprietor of LB Motors. He was
famous on the motor racing circuits of Ireland, a member of 500 Motor Racing
Club of Ireland and took part in his first TT in 1955. He married Gladys and
patented Rockababy, a device that could be fitted to a pram to simulate a rocking
motion and put baby to sleep. They initially lived in Dundonald but returned to
Dublin after the death of his mother.
6 Percy Lovell Butt born circa 1880 at Bristol served in WW1 and was a prisoner of world.
As youngest son, he married Elsie Lomas Lovell, widow of William Bailey at Emmanuel
Church, Hampstead on 25 Sep 1917.
7 Mary Lovell Butt, third daughter born 3 Oct 1884 at Somerset Street, Kingsdown, Bristol
married Frank Rowland on 25 Dec 1909 at St Catherine’s Church, Caernarfon. Frank
was a railway contractor and the son of William Rowland of Waterloo, Liverpool.
8 Dorothy Lovell Butt youngest daughter born 1889 at Bristol was a music teacher and
married Claud Beresford Vernon Hodgson in August 1922 at Steyning, Sussex.
9 Richard Butt born in Shanghai, China circa 1892 (may be a nephew although noted
as a son on census of 1901).
