Elmfield - WIP
NAME Elmfield, Mount Carmel Convent, Blackrock Hospice
AREA LOCATION Blackrock, Chapel Lane (now Sweetman's Avenue).
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838 - 1845 and 1898-1913 place it in the townland of
Newtown Blackrock but it is not named.
GENERAL Five bay two story house. The chapel was built in 1824 in the grounds of
the Carmelite convent and served the Catholic population until 1845 when St John the Baptist's
Church was opened on Temple Road. Entrance was via Mount Merrion Avenue when it was in
use as a school.
YEAR BUILT circa 1780
VALUATION No valuation found and in the 1901 census it is noted that there were 14
occupants occupying 24 rooms.
