Beaufield House
NAME Stillorgan Lodge/Beanfield/Beresford House/Beaufield House
AREA LOCATION STILLORGAN, now the site of Beaufield Manor, off Woodlands Avenue.
It was midway between the entrance to Mount Merrion and Stillorgan
on what was known as the High Road to Bray. The entrance was by way
of a green gate in the early 1800's.
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838-1845 and 1898-1913 place it in the townland of Stillorgan
North on both maps.
GENERAL In 1799 "Land formerly held by Robert Emmet now in the possession of
Thomas Addis Emmet leased to William Fleming for 95 years (Total land
44A 3R 27P or 63A 3R 13P statute)" It had two gatelodges lodges which are
no longer extant. Looking at maps from 1816, it seems that Stillorgan Lodge
shared the same plot but has been merged by 1880 which may explain the
steps to nowhere from the Lower Kilmacud Road at Beaufield Park. When
Beaufield was put up for sale in 1846, it was described as having 6
bedrooms (5 of them with dressing rooms) and a water closet. In 1881
Thomas Shannon Martin of T & C Martin who had been leasing the house
from 1867 bought it from the Landed Estate Court. The lot included
Beaufield, Garnaville and Ornee Cottage. The above photographs were taken
shortly before it was demolished and after the fire in 1987. This house looks
to have been "Victorianised" but the eves are projecting and the doorcase is
definitely Georgian. Two storey over basement, the windows were probably
replacements from the late 1800's. The house was for sale in 1901 and 1904
on 23 acres.
YEAR BUILT circa 1820
VALUATION In 1912 the valuation was 144 pounds and in the 1911 census it is noted as having
14 rooms occupied by family.
