Stradbrook House
NAME STRADBROOK HOUSE
AREA LOCATION Stradbrook Lawn, Blackrock/Stradbrook
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838-1845 and 1898-1913 place it in the townland of Stradbrook and it
is annotated as Stradbrook House on both.
GENERAL House with 3 gatelodges, north, southeast & southwest on the Rockford Estate. Only
the north lodge survives, now known as Oakdene Lodge. The house was built by Sir William Betham and
named after his birthplace. It was a three bay, two storey over basement with a central protruding bay,
granite raised quoins and a parapet. The house was jointly purchased by Charles Acton and his mother
Isabel La Touche in 1946 having sold Kilmacurragh House in Wicklow. Over the next three years the
house was converted into flats. Isabel occupied the ground floor, Charles the basement and four flats
above were rented out. Charles used the grounds for growing fruit.
YEAR BUILT circa 1832/3
VALUATION In 1878 the valuation was 120 pounds and in the 1901 census it
is noted as having 15 rooms occupied by the family.
