NAME Newstead House, Newstead Abbey/Newstead
AREA LOCATION ROEBUCK, Clonskeagh Road adjacent to Richview and between Hollywood and
Knockrabo. Site now part of the UCD campus.
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838-1845 and 1898-1913 place it in the townland of Roebuck. It is
not marked on the earlier map but is annotated as Newstead House on the later
map.
GENERAL ‘Upon this holding there is a thatched cottage containing parlour, drawing room
and kitchen, two bed chambers, a small garden, stable.’ (Brassington 1832). A plain property carved
out of Roseville in 1845 with gatelodge and a long carriage drive. In 1904 it was described as a
charming residence with five/six family bedrooms and three reception rooms. It had a large garden,
tennis and pleasure gardens and stabling.
YEAR BUILT circa 1845
VALUATION In 1872 the valuation was 60 pounds and in the 1901 census it is noted as having
12 rooms occupied by family.

In 1783 the meadow was leased by Mr Cheater but by 1799 the lands have been leased by the
Rt Hon Lord Trimlestown to Charles Haskins. By 1812 it was the estate of Solomon Richards
