Belfield in Roebuck Park
NAME Bellefield/Belfield
AREA LOCATION Now the site of Belfield Downs off Goatstown Avenue.
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838-1845 and 1898-1913 place it in the townland of Roebuck
and it is annotated as Bellefield and Belfield respectively. Not to be confused
with Belfield within the UCD Campus.
GENERAL 1783: House and garden leased by Mr Dease. It included the land later to
be Roebuck Park. This estate leased by Lord Trimleston to Thomas Kemmis, who let it to Billett, who
let it to Mr Evoy in 1804, whose interest was bought by Daniel Kinahan.
‘On this holding is a small dwelling house two stories high very old and in bad order with coach house, stable
and garden.’ (Brassington 1832)
The house itself was demolished in1984, the gatelodge built circa 1865 survives along with its entrance
pillars and screen on Goatstown Road, which look to be slightly older.
YEAR BUILT circa 1790
VALUATION In 1900 the valuation was 56 pounds and in the 1901 census it is noted as
having 10 rooms occupied by family.
