Thomas Kemmis born 4 May 1753 was the eldest son of Thomas Kemmis, attorney of Kildare
Street and Susanna Long. He was an Attorney of his Majesty’s Court of Exchequer in Ireland
and was admitted to the Court of the Kings Bench in 1773. He married Anne (Nancy) White on
17 Sep 1773 (ML 31 Aug 1773) and they lived at Mary Street. Nancy was the daughter of Henry
White, attorney of Kildare Steet. Thomas was working with Henry White at Jervis Street in 1776.
His father died in 1774 and he was left Shaen Castle. He held Mount Anville from 1799 to 1802.
He purchased Mount Sackville, Castleknock, near Dublin, as his country house but continued
to live almost entirely in Kildare Street. He was elected member of the RDS in 1808. They were
living at Mount Sackville by 1810 and had a black spaniel called Bang. Nancy died 29 Jul 1810
and Thomas died 15 Jan 1823 and was buried at St Anne, Dawson Street.
1 Thomas Kemmis, baptised 5 Sep 1774 at St Mary’s. He took Holy orders in 1796. He
inherited the Shaen Castle, lands at Roebuck, and the Durrow estate, King's County
on the death of his father. Thomas married (ML 2 Nov 1797) Mary Rikey, only
daughter and heiress of Arthur Rikey of Castleknock, Co Dublin. They lived at Brockley
Park in Queens’s County. Rev Thomas died 4 Oct 1827 at Woodside in Cheshire. The
contents of Brockley Park were sold shortly after his death and later the lease of
Brockley on 200 acres was sold by his executors.
1 Thomas Kemmis eldest son born circa 1800 married Mary Henrietta Jelly in August
1834 at Garryhinch Church. Mary was the daughter of the Rev Robert Blackwood
Jelly of Portarlington. They lived at Shaen Castle. Thomas died 8 Sep 1844.
1 Thomas Kemmis born circa 1837 married Victoria Alexandria Hamiliton
eldest daughter of Hans Henry Hamilton, QC of 26 Fitzwilliam Place on
1 Jun 1858 at St Peter’s Parish Church.
1 Helena Kemmis born at 26 Fitzwilliam Place on 13 Apr 1859.
2 Thomas Henry Kemmis born 11 Jul 1860 at 26 Fitzwilliam Place.
3 Augusta Mary Kemmis born 26 Jun 1862 at 28 Fitzwilliam Place.
Mary secondly married Sir Henry March, MD.
2 Robert Kemmis, second son of the late Thomas Kemmis died in 1862.
3 Arthur Kemmis born circa 1806 joined the army and later went to Australia. He
married Aphrasia Raymond on 10 Dec 1831 in Sydney. Aphrasia was the
daughter of James Raymond, Post-master General of the Territory. Arthur was
managing director of the Port Philip Steam Navigation Co. He died on 7 Feb 1842
at Melbourne survived by his wife and six children.
4 Mary Kemmis only daughter born circa 1809 married Charles Hogan on 1 Jan 1828
at St Peter’s Church. Charles was the third son of William Hogan of Fairyland,
Milltown, Co Dublin. They lived at Charlton in Roebuck.
5 Henry Kemmis born circa 1812 went to Australia. He married Mary Dodd who
died at Yankalilla in 1848. He secondly married Isabel Daglish on 19 Mar 1851 at
Rapid Bay. Isabel was the youngest daughter of William Daglish of Yankalilla.
Henry died at Port Macquarie circa 1894.
2 Anne Kemmis eldest daughter baptised 12 Oct 1775 at St Marys married Richard
Warburton of Garryhinch, Kings County ML 1800. Anne died at Nice on 29 Aug 1852.
3 Susannah Kemmis baptised 30 April 1779 at St Marys married William Talbot of Mount
Talbot, Co Roscommon ML 1802. Susannah died 30 Aug 1813.
4 Mary Kemmis baptised 2 Oct 1782 at St Marys married Arthur Carden of the Priory,
Templemore, Co. Tipperary, Captain in H M 4th Dragoon Guards in 1801. She became
Lady Carden in 1820. Sir Arthur died in May 1822 at Templemore. Mary secondly
married Joseph Smith of Mount Butler, Corbally, Co Tipperary in December 1823. Mary
died in July 1867 at Mount Butler House near Roscrea.
5 Henry Kemmis baptised 27 Sep 1774 at St Marys 2nd son was MP for Tralee
(1798–1800) and later a KC. Died in 1857. Henry inherited the freehold of Killeen and
a property in Co Wicklow on the death of his father.
6 William H Kemmis baptised 23 Oct 1777 at St Marys. As youngest son he inherited the
Ballinacor estate on the death of his father. He was Crown Solicitor and solicitor to the
Treasury and retired in 1859. He married Ellen Mansergh on 11 May 1805. Ellen was
the second daughter of Nicholas Southcote Mansergh of Greenane, Co Tipperary. He
died 20 Jul 1864 at is house on Kildare Street and there is a memorial in St Anne’s,
Dawson Street.
