George Kemmis born 4 Jun 1808 son of William H Kemmis of Ballinacor and Ellen Southcote
Mansergh. He graduated Trinity and was a midshipman in the Royal Navy in 1827 and served
on HMS Galatea. He took Holy orders in 1832 and was appointed curate at Castlemacadam.
He was living at Camira Glebe, Queen’s County and married Caroline Olphert on 23 Apr 1835
at Newtown-Limavadi Church. Caroline was the third daughter of the Rev John Olphert of
Drumachose, Co Londonderry. He was vicar of Oregan, (Rosenallis) Queen’s County for 45
years. Caroline died 29 Nov 1856 at Camira Glebe. Three weeks after giving birth. George
died 8 Jun 1880 at 89 Waterloo Road. His funeral service was held at Maryborough. Memorial
in St Brigid's, Rosenallis.
1 William Kemmis eldest son born 8 Aug 1836 joined the Royal Artillery in 1856 and
attained the rank of Colonel in 1884. He retired in 1886 on succeeding to Ballinacor,
an 8K acre estate on the death of his uncle William Gilbert Kemmis. He married
Ellen Gertrude-de-Horne Christy Steinman on 20 Aug 1862 at Knockholt, Kent. Ellen
was eldest daughter of George Steinman Steinman, FSA, of Knockholt House, Sundridge,
Kent. They had at least five children. William died of Ballinacor, Rathdrum, Co Wicklow
on 3 Feb 1900 and was buried at Ballinatone, Co Wicklow.
2 John Olphert Kemmis second son born circa 1837 was a captain in the HM 15th
Regiment. He married Mary Louisa Needham on 14 Oct 1863 at New Brunswick, Canada.
He had retired by 1891 to Cheltenham. They had at least five children. John died in
Guernsey on 26 Dec 1913.
3 Thomas Kemmis took Holy orders and married Penelope Roberts on 5 Aug 1873 at
Monkstown Church. Thomas was living at Clonalee, Queens County and Penelope was
the daughter of Robert Roberts of Monkstown. They had one child and Penelope died
circa 1875. Thomas secondly married Letitia Maria Florence Pendleton on 13 Jun 1877
at Monkstown Church and they had two children. Letitia was the daughter of Captain
Henry Pendleton.
4 George Kemmis born 16 Oct 1840 at Camira Glebe married Maria Francis Catherine De
Courcey on 23 Sep 1869 at Wolborough Church Newton Abbot. Maria was the eldest
daughter of Rear Admiral De Courcey, CB. George died 23 May 1885. Memorial in St
Brigid's, Rosenallis.
5 Henry Marcus Kemmis born 19 Jul 1846 at Camira Glebe was educated at Rossall School,
Fleetwood, Lancashire, England. He was a MD of Torquay House, Kilternan and married
Mary Frances Armstrong on 27 Oct 1870 at Monkstown Parish Church. Mary, resident at
Monkstown was the only daughter of John G Armstrong, a banker of De Vesci Terrace,
Monkstown. He was medical officer for Glencullen in 1870 and medical attendant at
Stillorgan Dispensary in 1874 and was appointed medical officer and public vaccinator for
No 2 district of the Bridgwater Union in December that year. He resigned in 1878 but was
elected to the No 1 district in 1881. In 1891 were living at Monmouth Street, Bridgewater.
Henry died 12 Jun 1902 at Bridgewater, Taunton, Somerset. Mary died at Bridgwater on
24 Nov 1928.
1 Georgina Florence Kemmis only daughter born 22 Sept 1871 at Kilgobbin. She
married Philip Scott Surtees on 11 May 1891 at Bridgwater. They were living in
Bristol in 1901. She died at Bridgwater on 12 Jun 1909.
1 Stillborn daughter Surtees 14 Aug 1901.
2 Herbert George Kemmis born 16 May 1873 at Foxrock was a banker. He married
Florence Aimee Fetherston Bolton on 7 Sep 1901 at St Nicholas, Cork City. Florence
was the daughter of Thomas Bouchier Bolton a bank manager. Herbert died at
Sussex on 1 Aug 1949.
3 Charles Tynte Kemmis born 16 Mar 1876 at Fryern Lodge, Bridgwater was an artist and
painter. He died unmarried at Bridgwater on 11 Oct 1927.
4 John Garnet Kemmis born 16 Aug 1877 at Fryern Lodge, Bridgwater died 9 Mar 1878
same place.
5 Henry Olphert Kemmis born 1885 at Bridgwater was a bank cashier with Westminster
Bank in 1929 based at Frome. He married Doris Emily Cole in 1930 and died after a
car accident in 1940.
6 Anna Benjamina Kemmis, eldest daughter born 13 Sep 1848 at Camira Glebe married Owen
Andrew Armstrong on 15 Dec 1886 at St Stephen’s Church, Dublin. Owen was the son of G
C Armstrong, MD of Blackrock. Anna died at Corrigeen on 28 Sep 1887.
7 Caroline Kemmis youngest daughter married Hon Arthur Hill-Trevor Montmorency MD at
Booterstown Church on 28 Mar 1878. Arthur was resident in Peamount Terrace, Blackrock
and the son of Very Rev Hervey, Viscount Mountmorres. Caroline was married from St
Helen’s, Avoca Avenue, Blackrock.
8 Arthur Kemmis born 28 Jun 1850 at Camira Glebe. He was living at Corrigeen, Stradbally
and it was announced that he was to marry Maud Isabel Stratford Tuke in 1896. Maud was
the only daughter of Captain Stratford Tuke of the Royal Navy. However no marriage has
been found.
9 Edward Richard born 7 Nov 1856 died 8 Jan 1877. Memorial in St Brigid's, Rosenallis.
