NAME Marino/Moreen
AREA LOCATION Sandyford Road one mile from Dundrum now the Central Bank (Mint on 37 acres).
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838-1845 and 1898-1913 place it in the townland of Balally
and it is annotated as Moreen on both. Earlier maps show a house called
Marino on the site, (Taylor 1816 & Duncan 1821).
GENERAL In 1815 John McKay had the House, Offices and Gardens for let with up to 70 acres.
In 1842 a steeple chase was run at Moreen by Manners McKay. The 2nd gate lodge of Clonard opposite
Balally Terrace on the Sandyford Road is still extant. Land from Moreen was given to the council in 1904
for the building of these eight labourers cottages. The Fitzsimon family put Moreen up for sale in 1933, it
was described as a medium sized Georgian house with a gatelodge entrance. After the fire of 1951 it was
again for sale on 124 acres with road frontage of 3700'. The external walls of the house and the out
buildings were still in good condition and it had a front a back gatelodge.
YEAR BUILT circa 1790
VALUATION In 1847 the valuation was 342 pounds and in the 1911 census it is noted as
having 19 rooms occupied by family.
