E Eversham
NAME EVERSHAM
AREA LOCATION STILLORGAN, junction of N11 and Newtownpark Avenue.
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838-1845 and 1898-1913 place it in the townland of Galloping
Green North and it is annotated as Eversham on both maps.
GENERAL Built by the Proby estate circa 1830. Shared gate lodge (extant) with Abeline on
Newtownpark Avenue. The house was owned by Thomas Dixon along with Abilene and Ardlui in the
early 1800s. To the front it's a single storey villa over a part raised basement and is two storey to the rear.
Wooden bow windows have been unsympathetically replaced with aluminium. While the gatelodge is
a protected structure, the house is not. The site lost 15½ perches during the Bray Road widening
scheme of 1938. The Swift family claim £300 and had a new front wall built by the council.
YEAR BUILT circa 1830
VALUATION In 1921 the valuation was 61 pounds.
NUMBER
OF ROOMS In the 1911 census it is noted as having 11 rooms occupied by family.
ARCHITECT Unknown but gatelodge may be by Lawrence Aloysius A McDonnell (possibly as similar in style?)
SOURCES Thom’s directories, Parish records, Valuation books, contemporaneous newspapers
OSI maps & NAI Census and Wills.
