University Lodge
NAME Roebuck Grove/Whiteoaks/University Lodge
AREA LOCATION On UCD Campus close to the Greenfield entrance.
MAP LOCATION On UCD Campus, it appears on the 1898-1913 map in the townland of
Roebuck and it is annotated as Roebuck Grove.
GENERAL It was approached by a very long carriage drive off the Stillorgan Road.
On 12 acres in 1848. 300 seventy year old trees (Ash, Oak, Elm & Beech) were felled in 1854
and another 400 trees felled in 1864. It was on 14 acres in June 1862 when it was leased to R S
Guinness. It was for sale in 1874 and again in 1911. It was renamed Whiteoaks in 1939 and
renamed again when it was acquired with 34 acres by UCD in 1949. The celebrated Irish painter
Evie Hone was born here in 1894 - best known for her work in stained glass.
YEAR BUILT circa 1845
VALUATION In 1864 the valuation was 51 pounds and in the 1901 census it is noted as
having 13 rooms occupied by family.
