A who's who of those buried in our Dublin graveyards
Memorials Inscriptions
Memorial Inscriptions are mainly found in churches, graveyards and cemeteries and can offer a surprising amount of family
information. They may include information relating to several generations of the same family and are also a useful source in
conjunction with parish records or where a parish register is no longer extant or an entry not found. Whilst a death record
may show where the burial took place, as might an obituary - a headstone inscription can often list the name of a house or
give an insight into the life of the departed.
Whilst only the wealthier families could afford the cost of a headstone in earlier centuries, by the middle of the 20th century
having a headstone had become common practice.
Some of these graveyards have already been transcribed but never put online, or have been listed in alphabetical order
which disregards the importance of the placement of memorials.
If you are interested in joining the project, please contact us.
The memorials will be displayed in a simple excel spreadsheet in pdf format making them searchable and also easy for
search engines to find. This is based on the principle that these headstones were put in a public place to show the
affection/love that families had for their dear departed, and therefore should not be the preserve of genealogists
transcribing same for self-serving egotistical reasons.
