John Day Hurst son or Rowland Hurst and Ann Day was baptised at All Saint’s Wakefield in Yorkshire
on 3 May 1801. He graduated BA Caius College Cambridge in 1824 and MA in 1829 and took Holy
orders. He was curate of Penistone, Wakefield and married Louisa Haughton 4 Oct 1825 at Little
Missenden. Louisa was the only child of Henry Laughton of Newton Blossom-ville, Olney in
Buckinghamshire. Rev John was instituted Rector of Clapham, Croydon in 1828. He was headmaster
of the Classical school in Falmouth from 1835 to 1839. The family were living at Wood Lane Terrace,
Falmouth, Cornwall in 1841.
He was appointed Rector of St Catherine’s Dublin in July 1841 and appointed chaplain of Mount Jerome
Cemetery in 1842. In 1842 there was a riot at St Catherine’s Easter Vestry when Roman Catholics were
denied access and deprived of the opportunity of voting. They were entitled to vote on the tithe rate to
be struck for the year and how the money would be spent. Charges of drunkenness were brought
against him in 1843 by Thomas Whaley the organist at St Catherine's. Louisa died 5 Apr 1845 at
Eversham, Stillorgan survived by eight children and was buried at St Catherine’s on 12 Apr 1845. In
1846 Surgeon P Rooney of Kildare Street was buried at St Catherine’s graveyard, his funeral was
attended by 200 people, family and friends, both Catholic and Protestant. Just as the prayers of the
dead were to be read, the Roman Catholic curate of Westland Roe was passed a note signed by the Rev
Hurst that conveyed if any payers that were not Church of England or Ireland were read, he would be
sued, this was 23 years after an incident where Dr Michael Blake was sent a similar note at the funeral
of Arthur Darcy. It was reported that both Catholics and Protestants were embarrassed and felt
insulted by his conduct. John died 25 Nov 1849 at Phibsborough and was buried at St Catherine’s on
29 Nov 1849.
1 Henry Laughton Hurst born 24 Aug 1826 at Wakefield went to Australia. He married Sarah
Connor at Holy Trinity Church Adelaide on 25 Feb 1851. He was Superintendent of the Letter
Branch of the General Post Office when he died in July 1882 after 30 years service.
2 Louisa Laughton Hurst baptised at Penistone on 1 Nov 1827 was 64 living at Phibsboro Road
and married Frederick Augustus Bradshaw on 4 May 1850 at St Paul’s, Dublin. Frederick was
living at Arran Quay and was the youngest son of William Bradshaw. Frederick died
5 Feb 1862 at Arran Quay the residence of his brother aged 33.
3 Henrietta Anne, second daughter baptised at Wimpole, Cambridgeshire in 1829 died
24 Aug 1846 at Phibsboro and was buried at St Catherine’s.
4 Anna Louisa Hurst baptised 16 Feb 1831 at Wimpole, Cambridgeshire.
5 John Day Hurst baptised 1832 at Wimpole, Cambridgeshire.
6 Helen Louisa Hurst born 1834 baptised 6 Jan 1835 at Croydon.
7 Son Hurst born at Falmouth in October 1835.
8 Mary Emily Hurst baptised at Falmouth on 7 Jan 1836.
9 Lionel Hurst born 1838 in Cornwall.
10 Lionel Arrington Hurst born at 10 Nelson Street baptised at St Catherine’s 12 Oct 1841. He
was a cabinet maker and married Anne Lord on 11 Oct 1869 at Christ Church, Southport.
Anne was the daughter of James Lord, a farmer. Lionel died at Bolton in 1887.
