Thomas James Quin born circa 1756 eldest son of Henry Quin took Holy orders. His father
was a doctor and purchased Borleigh Demesne for 13K. His father died on 11 Feb 1791
at Stephen’s Green and left him the Wexford and Wicklow estates. Thomas James married
Ellen Wilson in 1795. Ellen was the eldest daughter of William Wilson of Wilson Castle,
Limerick. They lived at Wingfield Bray, Co Wicklow. Thomas was the treasurer of the
Cathedral Church of St Mary, Limerick and died 22 Jan 1841 aged 85 at Wingfield. Ellen
died 29 Jan 1855 at 29 St Stephen’s Green. Memorial tablet in St Michan's Church.
1 Henry Charles Quin eldest son born circa 1796 in Co Dublin was educated at Harrow
and Trinity. Henry of Wingfield & Burleigh married Isabella Katherine Plunket on
28 Jan 1847 at Old Connaght. Isabella was the third daughter of Lord Plunket (William
Conyngham Plunket, 1st Baron Plunket of Newton). The Honourable Isabella died
3 Aug 1857 at Burleigh and Henry died 10 Aug 1867 at Burleigh. No issue found.
2 William Charles Quin second son born 20 Sep 1797 at St Stephen’s Green was
called to the Bar in 1824. He married Elizabeth Kemmis on 2 Feb 1827. Elizabeth was
the only daughter of William Kemmis of Kildare Street and Ballinacor, Co Wicklow. He
was secretary to the Commissioners of Education. His Burleigh estate was for sale
through the Encumbered Estates from 1856 to 1858. He was also an Ecclesiastical
Commissioner and they lived at Claremont, Bray. He died 26 Apr 1871 at 45
Kildare Street. Elizabeth died 26 Sep 1889 at Woodridings, Pinner aged 79.
1 Ellen Quin eldest daughter born circa January 1828 at 25 Kildare Street died
5 Jul 1869 at 3 Pembroke Road.
2 Thomas Quin eldest son died in October 1841 at Claremont.
3 Charles William Quin born on 2 Jul 1830 baptised at St Anne’s, Dublin. He was
educated at Cheltenham and Trinity College Dublin. He joined the HEIC as a
cadet in 1849. He married Henrietta Wynetta Phillips on 2 Jun 1828 at Nasirabad,
India. Henrietta was the daughter of Captain Richard Phillips, Madras European
Regiment. Charles was killed on 27 Jun 1857. He is remembered on a headstone
on the Burleigh Demesne.
4 Henry Quin born circa 1833. He was a JP and died a bachelor at The Sackville
Club on 13 Jan 1885, his brother George the informant. Henry of Burleigh left
3K in personal estate.
5 William Quin born circa 1836, as third surviving son died at Claremont, Co Dublin
on 2 Jul 1868.
6 George Quin born 13 Jan 1842 baptised at St Anne's, Dublin. He grew up at
Claremont, Co Dublin and at Burleigh House, Wexford.* He was educated at
Winchester, Blackheath and Kingston on Thames. He joined the HEIC as a cadet in
1858 and served with the 79th (Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders) Regiment of
Foot and attained the rank of Lieutenant. He married Sophia Talbot Scarlett on
2 Dec 1865 at Peshawar, Bengal, India on 2 Dec 1865. His father’s names is given as
Charles William in error on his marriage record. Sophia was the daughter of Robert
Scarlett. He left the army in July 1871 and returned to Ireland where he bred race
horses. He was hunting with the Carlow and Island Hounds with his brother Henry
in 1872 and was involved in a fracas with Walter Sweetman, JP. Walter fired 4 shots
at him for jostling his horse and was imprisoned for 5 months. George lived at
Castleknock Lodge in the Phoenix Park from 1876 to 1887. He separated from his
wife Sophia in 1884. George was Keeper of the Match book in Ireland for the Irish
Turf Club from 1885 and secretary of the Irish National Hunt Steeplechase
Committee in 1887. He took on the role of secretary manager to the Leopardstown
Club in 1888 and moved into Leopardstown House. He was known as Captain Quin.
Sophia sought a divorce in December 1889 on the grounds of adultery and cruelty
and George denied the charges. The charges related to 18 years previously 1870/1
and she accused him of having an affair with a servant Margaret Morgan, a Mrs
Graham, who had died in the intervening years, and another lady whose name was
kept out of the public domain, but who was the wife of a regimental colleague. The
case was dismissed. He resigned his position as Keeper of the Match Book in 1891
and was a frequent traveller to the South of France and Monaco. George died
19 Jul 1917 at Leopardstown House and left 7K in personal estate in Ireland and 4K
in England. Probate was to General Kenneth Lean, CB of Ridgeway Place, Wimbledon.
He left £700 to his daughter Mrs Ryves, 40 shares in the Leopardstown Club to his
sister in law Mary Charlotte (wife of Richard) and £500 in trust for his son George
Frederic. The residue was left to Miss Alexandrina (Ina) Whitehill, a dairy farmer and
proprietress of the Leopardstown Dairy.
1 Georgina Emily (Mina) Quin eldest daughter born 1868 in Kent married
Kenneth Edward Lean in April 1887 at Christ Church, Cantonment, Rangoon.
Kenneth was with the Royal Scots Fusiliers and was the fourth son of the
late James Lean BCS of Lynton, North Devon. They were living at 25,
Alexandra Road, Walmer, Kent in 1921.
1 Hugh Henry Lean only child born 1888 in India. He joined the
Highland Light Infantry and attained the rank of Captain. He was
killed in action 29 Jul 1917 at St Julien near Ypres.
2 Constance Sybil Quin born 20 Jun 1879 at Castleknock. She secondly married
George Bernard Ryves at Paddington in 1902 and emigrated to Canada in 1906.
Constance died in 1956.
3 George Frederic Quin born 23 May 1881 at Castleknock.
7 Richard James Quin youngest son youngest son of the late William Charles Quin
was a barrister married Mary Charlotte Nicholl on 28 Dec 1878 at Chapel, Charter
House. Mary Charlotte was the daughter of Charles Richard Nicoll, surgeon Major,
late Grenadier Guards and granddaughter of the late Rev T V R Nicoll, Rector of
Cherington, Warwickshire.
3 Isabella Quin, second daughter married Rev James Jones on 29 Jun 1836 at Dublin. James
was the third son of Rev James Jones of Urney.
4 Thomas Quin born circa 1805 in Co Wicklow attended Trinity.
5 Richard Quin born circa 1806 in Co Wicklow attended Trinity. He took Holy orders and
was appointed to Armagh and later Ardee. He married Edith Pearson at Belfast on
17 Jun 1841. Edith was the daughter of Major General Sir Thomas Pearson. Richard
died on 10 Apr 1886 as the Rectory Forkhill, Dundalk where he had been rector for 28
years.
1 Thomas James Quin eldest son born 29 Jun 1843. He married Mary Wemyss
on 27 Jan 1870 at Agra, India. Thomas was a captain in the 29th Regiment
and was an assistant commissioner at Ajmere. Mary was the daughter of
Major Wemyss of the Bengal Army. Thomas attained the rank of Major
General and they lived at Borleigh.
1 Richard Percival Wemyss Quin only son born circa 1874 in India was
educated in Germany and Sandhurst. He was with the 41st Drogas
and attained the rank of Colonel during WW1. He married Elizabeth
Maud Lumsden in 1909 and when he retired in 1922, they moved to
Borleigh where they owned a vast stretch of the Slaney River.
Wemyss died in 1945.
1 Mary Helen Wemyss Quin married Malcolm Harvey of Duffcarrig,
Gorey on 25 May 1945.
2 Daughter Quin born 21 Aug 1845 at Armagh.
3 John James Quin, second son and twin born 15 Mar 1848 was with H B M
Consular Service, Japan. He married Laura Isabella Ruxton on 8 Dec 1871 at
St John’s Cathedral, Hong Kong Laura was the daughter of Major George
Ruxton of Rahanna House, Ardee, Co Louth.
4 Edith Quin (twin) born 15 Mar 1848 died a spinster 16 Feb 1884 at The Craig,
Rostrevor.
5 Richard Quin, youngest son took Holy orders. He married Dorothea Roberta
Dunlop on 21 Jul 1880 at Mellifont Church, Drogheda. Dorothea was the
daughter of Robert Foster Dunlop.
6 Harriet Quin youngest daughter born circa 1808 married Matthew Forde Beauman of
Hyde Park, Wexford at Delgany, Co Wicklow in July 1841. Matthew died 25 Dec 1872
and Harriet died on 11 Sep 1880 at Hyde Park.
1 Jane Beauman born circa 1844 died a spinster at Hyde Park on 3 Jul 1920.
2 John Christopher Beauman only son born circa 1846 died 13 Apr 1869 aged 23
and was buried in the family vault at Inch Church, near Gorey.
3 Isabella Beauman born circa 1847 died 7 Jul 1871.
4 Anne Margaret Beauman born circa 1848 died a spinster on 6 Sep 1918.
5 Harriette Beauman married John Christopher Hoare on 9 Jan 1878 at Gorey Parish
Church.
6 Elizabeth Beauman married Henry Quin of Bloemfontein, South Africa on 4 Jan 1888
at Gorey Parish Church.
7 Mary Beauman born circa 1851 died a spinster at Hyde Park on 2 Jun 1893.
8 Emily Beauman born circa 1853 died a spinster at Hyde Park in 1941.
6 John James Quin, fifth son born circa 1814 attended Trinity and was called to the bar in
January 1841. As youngest son he died 27 Dec 1842 in Milan.
Burnleigh later Borleagh House. In the 1960's it was home to Richard Greene, actor famous
for his role in the Adventures of Robin Hood.
