Henry Hamilton son of James Hamilton and Hannah Philips was born at Ballymacoll circa 1760.
He married Mary Wetherall in March 1785 at Dawson Street. Mary was the daughter of John
Weatherall of Dublin. Henry took over as sole agent to the Duke of Leinster in 1798 after the
murder of agent James Spenser. He managed the Leinster office at Dominick Street. They had at
least 16 children. Mary died on 18 Jul 1816 and was buried at St Peter’s graveyard in Dunboyne.
Henry died in Rutland Square on 14 Nov 1844 and was buried with his wife.
1 James John Hamilton eldest son born circa 1788 married Margaret Carter at St Ann’s Dublin
on 28 Jul 1809. He secondly married the Hon Anne De Courcey on 20 May 1821 at
Glanmire Church. Anne was the 3rd daughter of the Rt Hon Lord Kinsale. James died
5 Dec 1842 at Ballymacoll.
1 James Hamilton born circa 1817 took Holy orders and was later Vicar of Melbourne.
James married Louisa Durbin on 3 Mar 1847 at St Mary’s Church Cheltenham. Louisa
was the fourth daughter of Joseph James Durbin of Rodney Durbin of Rodney Villas.
James died in 1911.
1 Archibald Henry Hamilton eldest son born circa 1848 was educated at Christ's
College, Cambridge. He was called to the bar in 1876 and married Mary Anne
Pears-Archbold on 14 Apr 1885 at St Paul’s, Knightsbridge. Mary Anne died
4 May 1899 and Archibald died 21 Aug 1900.
2 Henry Hamilton married Helen Dickson at the British Consulate Bayonne France on
21 Aug 1850. Henry was captain in the 13th Light Dragoons and Helen was the
daughter of Colonel William Dickson of the 7th Bengal Cavalry. Henry was appointed
JP in 1858. He died 9 Aug 1861 and was buried at Dunboyne. His brother Rev James
erected a plaque in his memory at Dunboyne church. Helen died 19 Apr 1869 at
Edinburgh.
2 Isabella Rebecca Hamilton, second daughter married Rev Charles T Wade in June 1818 at
Ballymacoll. Charles was the youngest son of Robert Wade of Clonbraney, Co Meath.
Isabella, a widow died 10 Jun 1865 at Kickapoo, Illinois, America, the residence of her son in
law Charles Mayo.
3 Mary Hamilton married Captain Wetherall of the Royal Navy. She died at Castle Hill,
Middlesex in February 1848.
4 Harriet Hamilton fourth daughter married the Rev Erasmus Borrowes at St Georges’
Church on 7 Mar 1825. Erasmus was the son of Erasmus Borrowes, Bart and his wife
Henrietta de Robillard. He succeeded to the estates on the death of his brother Walter in
1834. Erasmus died in 1866 aged 66.
5 John Hamilton, third son married Catherine Elizabeth Smyth on 1 Mar 1819 at St Peter’s
Church. Catherine was the youngest daughter of William Smyth of Ballymacoll, Westmeath.
John was dead before 1861.
1 Mary Louisa Hamilton married widower William Armit Lees at St Peters Church,
Dublin on 6 Feb 1861.
6 Hans Henry Hamilton fourth son of Henry Hamilton of Ballymacoll, Meath born 26 Aug 1800.
He attended Dr Nichols Scholl and graduated Trinity in 1820. He was admitted Greys Inns in
1821 and Kings Inns in 1823. He was called to the Irish Bar in 1823. He was admitted to the
guild of merchants by birth in 1832. Hans of Upper Merrion Street married Augusta Mary
Aldolphina Wetherall in April 1833. Augusta was the daughter of Lieut Gen Sir Frederick
Augustus Weatherall, GCH. She was presented to the Queen in 1838 at St James’ Palace.
They lived at 18 Merrion Street Upper from 1834 to 1844. Hans acted as agent to the Duke
of Leinster but resigned the position in 1844. He was appointed chairman of the Galway
Quarter Sessions in 1852 and transferred to Armagh in 1858. They lived at 26 Fitzwilliam
Place and commissioned a house to be built at 28 Fitzwilliam Place. Hans died 20 Apr 1875
and was buried at Dunboyne. He left 12K in personal estate. 28 Fitzwilliam place was put
up for sale in 1876. Augusta died 1 Oct 1885 at Blackburn aged 78. The estate of
Ballymaacoll was leased out by Hans in 1841 and was sold by the family in 1911 to Lord
Nugent. Other owners and tenants followed, including Boss Croker.
1 Augustus Henry Carr Hamilton born July 1834 at Upper Merrion Street went to
Woolwich Military College in 1851. He was involved in a wine and spirit club in London
and was bankrupt in 1874.
2 Rogers Adolphus Hamilton second son born 3 Nov 1835. Rogers was a lieutenant and
adjutant of the 3rd Sikh Irregular Cavalry and formerly of the 10th Bengal Light Cavary.
He took a distinguished part in repressing the mutiny which broke out at Ferozepore
on the 13 May 1857 and subsequently for several actions, among others at Hissar near
Hansi in September where he was severely wounded, resuming active service however
in October at Narnoul on 16 Nov 1857. At the siege of Lucknow in February and March
and at the relief of Azimchur on the 13 Apr 1858 where he fell mortally wounded in a
most gallant charge against the mutinous force under Koohr Singh. His leg was shot
off and he died the following day on 16 Apr near Azamghur in India aged 22. His
remains were there interred in the English burial ground.
3 Victoria Alexandria Hamiliton eldest daughter born July 1837 at Upper Merrion Street.
She married Thomas Kemmis on 1 Jun 1858 at St Peter’s Parish Church. Victoria was
living at 26 Fitzwilliam Place at the time of her marriage. They lived at Shaen Castle.
4 Frederica Mary Hamilton born 25 May 1840 at Upper Merrion Street. married Captain
Edward Nicholas Hill on 15 Jan 1861 at St Anne’s Church. Edward was the son of James
Thomas Hill of Anlaby, Yorkshire.
5 Edward Packenham Robert Hamilton, 3rd son born circa 1843. Captain of the 65th
Regiment, formerly of the 84th Regt was lost at sea in the City of Boston steamer about
1 Feb 1870 aged 27 years.
6 Florence Isabella Kemmis youngest daughter born circa 1844 married Richard Pierce
Butler on 15 Nov 1864 at St Stephen’s Church. Richard was in the army and the son of
Sir Richard Pierce Butler of Ballintemple, Co Carlow.
7 Douglas Hamilton youngest son born 26 Jul 1849 at Upper Merrion Street married
Adeline Hamilton on 16 Nov 1875 in London. Adeline was the youngest daughter of
Thomas Hamilton of Visington House, Co Meath.
7 Robert Hamilton, youngest son died at his residence in Fitzwilliam Street Lower on
14 Jan 1843.
8 Charlotte Hamilton youngest daughter died at Great Georges Street on 2 May 1827.
