William Joshua Crompton born 18 Dec 1806 at Nun Monkton, Yorkshire, son of Gilbert
Crompton & Elizabeth Johnston. He was the grandchild of Samuel Crompton of Derby and
the Rev George Johnson, vicar of Norton. William joined the army in 1825, was a lieutenant
by purchase with the 77th Regiment in 1826. He made Captain in 1834, Major in 1846 and
Lieut-Colonel in 1854. He never saw active service and retired as staff officer of Pensioners
in 1854 with the honorary rank of Colonel. He married Isabella Frances Sherard at
Polebrook on 23 Jun 1842. Isabella was the youngest daughter of Robert Sherard of
Oundle. They lived in Dublin from 1847 to 1856 and were at Belfield Roebuck from 1852 to
1854. By 1861 they were living in Cheltenham. William died 16 Apr 1896 at Notting Hill.
Isabella Frances died at 6 Ladbrook Road, Bayswater on 2 Jan 1901.
1 William Crompton eldest born 12 Apr 1843 at Warwick attended Winchester College.
He was 2nd master at Brisbane Grammar School in 1885 and afterwards Head
Master at Sydney High School, NSW and retired in 1901. He died in Sydney on
22 Apr 1906.
2 George Gilbert Crompton born circa 1847 in Rathmines. He worked as a survey in
Brisbane, Australia. He was an unmarried surveyor living with his parents in 1891.
He was body guard to the Commander-in-Chief during the Boar War. He married
Emma Dean on 1 Nov 1909 at St Mathias’, Paddington, Australia. Emma was the
only daughter of the late Job Dean. George died by his own hand in NSW on
12 Sep 1917.
3 Charles Arthur Crompton 21 October 1848 at 3 Connaught Place Rathmines
baptised at St Peters. He was a sergeant with the Royal Engineers in 1871 and died
unmarried on 5 Jul 1875 at Cherat, Punjab.
4 Isabella Emma Crompton born 19 July 1850 at 3 Connaught Place Rathmines
baptised at St Peters died unmarried 24 Jul 1923 at Bayswater.
5 Robert Sherlock Crompton born 21 July 1852 at Leinster Square baptised at St
Peter’s buried at Taney on 30 December 1852.
6 Edward Sherlock Crompton born 8 Feb 1854 at Belfield baptised at Taney was an
unmarried surveyor living with his parents in 1891. He died unmarried at Cape
Town, South Africa on 16 Aug 1898.
7 Georgiana Louisa Crompton second daughter born 6 Jun 1855 at St Stephen’s
Green died unmarried at Bath late of Ladbrook Garden on 23 Nov 1886.
8 Elizabeth Charlotte (Cherie) Crompton born circa 1858 in France living with her
parents in 1861. She married George Kaye Mills at St Peter’s Church, Bayswater on
24 Sep 1889. George was the second son of Rev J Mills, rector of Orton-Waterville,
Hunts.
