Kinahan Family of Roebuck Park
Daniel Kinahan of Roebuck Park and 11 Merrion Square founder of a wine and spirit enterprise.
Prior to living at Roebuck Park, he lived at Churchtown and was a grocer and wine merchant of
12 Trinity Street trading as D Kinahan from 1785. Prior to that the business was called Kinahan
& Greggs.
In 1806 he moved the wine business to the rear of No 11 Merrion Square (Hamilton row) which is
now Lincoln place. The grocery business carried on as Kinahan and Smyth (his nephew). The
company operated from 12 Trinity street and moved to The Carlisle Building in D’Olier Street, by
1819 it was known as Kinahan Son & Smith. The company advertised in 1842 that LL stood for
Lord Lieutenant's whiskey as the Duke of Richmond left instructions that a vat of this special
whiskey should be set apart for him with LL and a ducal coronet marked on it.
The company was extremely successful throughout the 19th century but in 1910 at the
shareholders meeting, chairman Edward Read advised a voluntary winding up the company due to
losses that he could not envisage being turned around. The Carlisle building was sold to William
Martin Murphy, proprietor of the Irish Independent, the stock in hand was transferred to Bagot and
Hutton who traded as Bagot Hutton & Kinahan, which in turn was dissolved in 1988.

Greystones run by the Bewley family. George died at Roebuck Park 21 Sep 1903 and
the bell at Taney church was dedicated to his memory. Margaret died at Roebuck Park
8 Feb 1914 and the altar rail at Taney church is dedicated to her memory.

5 Arthur Edward Kinahan born 6 Feb 1872 at Roebuck Park moved to Moyglare.
He married Rita Kathleen Wilmot-Chetwode, daughter of Edward Robert Erskine
Wilmot-Chetwode of Taney House at Oxford in 1901. Rita died at Sir Patrick
Dun's Hospital Dublin on 4 Feb 1943 and Arthur died 1 Apr 1946 at Moyglare.

7 Violet Georgina Kinahan born 20 May 1878 at Roebuck Park, worked for the
Redcross during WW1 and clocked up over 1000 hours at the supply depot. She
moved to Belfield in Roebuck Park after the death of her mother in 1914. She
died 22 May 1947 at the Tivoli Nursing home in Dun Laoghaire and was buried at
St Nahi's graveyard. She left 3K in personal estate.
8 Lilian Grace Kinahan born 15 Apr 1880 at Roebuck Park married Hugh Crompton
Bischoff, barrister at law of Ditton Hall, Surrey and son of Thomas William Bischoff
at Taney Church on 22 Jul 1905. The reception was held at Roebuck Park and the
couple honeymooned in the south of Ireland. They moved to Guilford in Surrey
and were living there with their two children, Olive and Bernard in 1911.
9 Rose Marion (Olive) Kinahan born 3 Sep 1881 at Roebuck Park worked as a VAD
during WW1. She died unmarried at Belfield in Roebuck Park on 3 Feb 1936.
There is a stone plaque in Taney church in her memory and she was buried at St
Nahi's graveyard. She left 4K in personal estate.
