James Alexander Kinnear born at main Street Ballibay to Alexander Kinnear, a merchant and Jane
Quinn alias Wright. By 1901 James and his widowed mother, his brother Thomas and two sisters
were living at Haddington Road in Dublin. He married Margaret Robinson at Ballymoney Parish
Church, Antrim on 7 Aug 1901. Margaret was the daughter of John Robinson, a farmer of
Ballymoney, Co Antrim. James was an accountant and a JP for the city of Dublin. He was founder
of Kinnear & Co Accountants initially based at Westmorland Street and later at 1 South Leinster
Street, Dublin. The family were living at Sydenham Road Ballsbridge by 1907 and Glenageary by
1930. Margaret died on 25 Sep 1952 at the Adelaide Hospital late of Glenageary and James died
at Palmerston, Arkendale Road, Glenageary on 25 Apr 1958.
1 Winifred Marjory Kinnear 15 May 1902 at Northbrook Road, Rathmines graduated Trinity
with a science degree in 1937. She was the first woman Registrar of the Medical School on
Trinity. She was a president of the Dublin Club and a member of the Soroptimist European
Federation. She was a spinster living with her father in 1958.
2 Gladys Jean Kinnear born 7 Sep 1904 at Merton, Sydenham Road, Ballsbridge married
William James Moffatt on 21 Sep 1930 at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Blackrock.
William was the son of William Moffatt, a merchant of Drumgoff, Stillorgan Park and was
working as an engineer in Iraq.
3 Nigel Alexander Kinnear born 3 April 1907 at Merton, Sydenham Road, Ballsbridge was
educated at Kingstown grammar school and Mill Hill, London. He graduated MB from
Trinity in 1930. He trained at Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital and Jersey General Hospital and
was appointed to the Adelaide Hospital in 1935.
In 1945 Nigel took a leave of absence to serve with Civilian Relief under the auspices of
the Red Cross. He met Frances Thomson on his arrival in Belgium. She was the Red
Cross transport officer in charge of escorting Nigel and three of his fellow Irish doctors;
Bob Collis, Paddy McClancy and Spud Murphy to Bergen Belsen concentration camp.
They became the first civilian medical team to enter Belsen following its liberation. Nigel
married Frances Eleanor Thomson on 22 Mar 1947 at St Chad’s Church, Lichfield. Frances
was the widow of Clifford George Allen Thomson of the 603 Squadron and the only
daughter of Henry Gardener of Gaia Lane, Lichfield. Nigel was a general surgeon but later
specialised in vascular surgery. He pioneered the development of vascular surgery in
Ireland together with Patrick Fitzgerald of St Vincent’s Hospital. He served as president of
the RCSI in 1961/2 and was also a chairman of the finance committee for a number of
years.
