John Watson Carlton, second son of James Carlton muslin manufacturer of Manchester and Mary
Watson of Temple Street, Chorton Row was born 9 Mar 1826 in Manchester. He married Mary Ann
Watson on 14 Jun 1849 at Manchester Cathedral. John was resident at Irwell House, Lower
Broughton and Mary Ann was the only daughter of Henry Watson of Smedley Lane, Cheetham.
Mary Ann died at Lingerwood, near Dalkeith, the residence of her brother on 16 Sep 1852 and was
buried at Cheetham, Lancashire. John put his house on Richmond Terrace, Cheetham Hill Road up
for sale in 1853 as he was moving to Australia.
John secondly married Eliza Ball at Collingswood, Victoria on 23 Mar 1854. Eliza was the third
daughter of James Crichton Ball and Hannah Ball of Mulvyn, Co Tyrone and Shannon near
Lifford. Her younger sister Annie Oram Ball was married at the same time to George Burd. Her
father James and sister Jane died on board the Edmund ship on the journey to Melbourne in
1853. John was a merchant and in partnership with Isaac Hocknell in William Street, Melbourne.
He dissolved the partnership, and sold his house in Robe Street in June 1858 as he had decided to
return to Europe. John died 18 Jul 1858 on board the Emeu Steamship and was buried at
Rusholme Road Cemetery, Dissenters' Burial Ground in Manchester. Eliza secondly married Rev J
Purdon Stoute of Bardsea, Ulverston on 3 Nov 1864.
1 James Crichton Carlton only son born at Collingswood, St Kilda, Australia in 1855. He
was nephew of John Kynaston Cross, MP for Bolton and his wife Emily Carlton. He took
a job as assistant to Frank DuBédat a stockbroker in August 1872 at a salary of £400
per year. He married Mary Anne Gray DuBédat at St Bartholomew’s Church, Dublin
on 13 Jun 1877. Mary Anne was the only child of John DuBédat and Catherine Sophie
Gray of Pembroke Road and she was also the cousin of Frank DuBédat. They lived
at Ardmeen from 1891 to 1892. In 1891 Frank DuBédat went bankrupt, absconded
and was declared a stock exchange defaulter. John assisted the Court of Bankruptcy
by working out the debts that Frank had left behind. James was a director of the
Dublin Portland Cement Company from 1882 to 1885. By 1901 the family were living
at 7 Spencer Road, Croydon. John died 8 Apr 1921 at Tunbridge Wells after an
operation and probate was to his wife. Mary Anne died 4 Feb 1932 at Southampton
aged 74.
1 John Crichton Carlton, eldest son born at 62 Northumberland Road, Dublin
on 10 Jun 1878 married Martha Emily Russell of Forest Hill on 3 Sep 1904 at
Christ Church, Forrest Hill. John died at Sydenham, Kent on 23 May 1912.
2 James Crichton Carlton born circa 1879 at Dublin a Corn & flour factor's
clerk in 1901.
3 Arthur Carlton born 3 Sep 1880 at 62 Northumberland Road.
4 Cecil Henry Carlton born circa 1881 in Dublin was an agent's clerk in 1901.
He married Ethel Penney on 29 Apr 1910 at Semans, Sask, Canada on
29 Apr 1910. Ethel was the only daughter of Henry James Penney of
Glenmoor, Woolston in Hampshire. Cecil died 22 Sep 1965 at Southampton.
5 Charles Gray Carlton born 19 Aug 1882 at 62 Northumberland Road was a
student of Thomas Lea, Schoolmaster at Hambleton in 1901.
6 Claude Gray Carlton born 12 Jan 1887 at 62 Northumberland Road enlisted.
He was a 2nd Lieut with the 9th Devonshire Regt and was killed in action
on 26 Oct 1917 at Ghelwelt, West Flanders, Belgium.
7 Roy Septimus Carlton born 15 Dec 1894 at Teddington, Middlesex enlisted.
He was a Lieutenant in the South Lancs. Regt, and was drowned in a
punting accident on 30 May 1917 at Weybridge.
2 Eliza Mary Watson Carlton born on St Kilda on 4 Jul 1857 at Robe Street died 5 Jan 1858
at St Kilda aged 6 Months.
