Mackey Family of Priory Cottage, Kilmacud
Stephen Mackey son of James Mackey and Mary Toole baptised 27.12.1780 at St Nicholas’s
Church married Catherine Ward daughter of Peter Ward on 02.12.1810 at St Mary’s, Pro
Cathedral. Stephen was a Partner in the seed firm of Toole and Mackey. His son James William
Mackey inherited his share of the business with land in Cork when he died on 19.01.1854
aged 74 years. The partnership with the Toole’s ceased in 1959.
Mackey’s Seed Merchants were located at Westmoreland Street and moved to Sackville Street in
1878. The building was destroyed by fire in 1922, it was rebuilt and opened in 1925. In 1969 the
building became part of the Gresham Hotel and Mackeys Seeds moved to Mary Street. Diarmuid
Gavin started off his working life in Horticulture at Mackeys Seeds in Mary Street between 1982 - 1985.
The business was then run by Jean Pierre Maurice Eliet born in Malo-les-Bains, France. Mackeys also
had a Garden Centre in Sandycove until circa 2007 when the site was sold for housing development.
1 James William Mackey eldest son born circa 1813 was twice Lord Mayor in 1866 and again
in 1873. He was knighted in 1873 and became High Sheriff in 1880. A life member of the
RDS and member of the Governing body of Glasnevin he married Hannah James Sylvia Jones
2nd daughter of Captain Sylvanus Jones of the 60th Rifles and 5th Fusiliers on 11.11.1847 at
Kircullen House, Galway and also on 22.12.1847 at St Mark’s Church. Sir James died on
14.12.1892 aged 78 years at his residence 70 Pembroke Road and is buried in the family vault
at St Andrews Church beside his father Stephen. The Toole family also have a vault in St
Andrew’s Church.

French Consulate to Ireland son of John Grimaud de Caux on 08.01.1877 at the Roman
Catholic Chapel in Marlboro Street.
1 Alice Marguerite Gabrielle Louise Tarleton Grimaud de Caux born 13.03.1878 at 14
Belvedere Place. Alice of Biarritz, France died on 24.06.1969.
2 Ernest Gabriel James Mary Grimaud de Caux born 28.07.1879 at 14 Belevere Place
educated at the Sorbonne and joined the staff of the Times in 1910. Ernest died in
1960 with his sister Alice at his side.
3 Emilie Antoinette Hannah Kathleen Grimaud de Caux born 21.06.1884 at Woodville,
Lucan married John Joseph McGuire of NYC on 15.09.1923 at Biarritz. Emilie of
Maplebury, Monkstown died on 26.09.1930 aged 46 years following childbirth at 7
Mount Street Crescent.
1 Maureen McGuire married Jean-Pierre Eliot and they had a daughter born at
Villa St Antoine in Biarritz. Jean Pierre took over the running of Mackeys Store.
2 Mary Emilie J. A. McGuire born in Dublin.
2 Emily Josephine Mackey baptised 14.03.1851 at St Andrews Church, Westland Row.
Emily died on 14.01.1886 aged 30 years of TB at Woodville, Lucan.
3 Julia Mackey born circa Jan 1852 died 03.04.1853 aged 14 months.
4 Kathleen Mary Mackey baptised on 29.07.1853 at St Andrews Church. Kathleen probated
her fathers will.
5 Sylvanus J Jones Mackey born 18.03.1855 died 13.08.1881 of TB aged 26 years at
Woodville, Lucan.
6 Constance Mary Baptist Mackey baptised on 28.11.1856 at St Andrew’s Church, Westland
Row, Dublin.
2 Maria Matilda Mackey eldest daughter married Michael Murphy son of John Murphy of
Williams Park, Rathmines on 10.10.1835 at Great Brunswick Street.
3 Kate Mackey 2nd daughter married John P Delaney MD 3rd son of Captain Delaney of
Ballyspellan House, Kilkenny on 20.06.1840 at Great Brunswick Street.
4 Peter Mackey MD born 01.05.1819 was gazetted to an Assistant Surgeon in the 9th
Regiment of Foot in India in August 1844. Peter died on 05.10.1854 at Balaclava.
5 Julia Mackey youngest daughter born circa 1822 died of consumption on 13.03.1843 aged
21 years.
6 Charles Mackey youngest son married Caroline Vaughan only daughter of James Vaughan
a solicitor of 29 Upper Jervis Street on 25.08.1849 at her father’s residence. The family lived
at Cullenswood, Rathmines. Charles died on 09.06.1858 in Paris, France.

2 James Joseph Mackey baptised 21.09.1851 at Rathmines died on 19.03.1877 aged
25 years of consumption at 10 Cullenswood Avenue.
