Clarke family of Priory, Kilmacud
William Clarke son of Benjamin Clarke and Mary Read was a captain in the SCR Infantry later known
as the Royal City of Dublin Militia. He married Deborah Willans Barnett, ML 29 Mar 1813. Deborah
was the daughter of William Barnet. William was resident at Phibblestown House, Clonsilla and
Leinster Terrace. William, late of Rutland died at Phibblestown on 27 Oct 1842. Deborah
secondly married widower Thomas Haughton White from Dalkey at Monkstown Church on
23 Oct 1856. Deborah died 17 Apr 1870 at Buckhurst Hill in Essex.
1 Benjamin Clarke born circa 1818 graduated Trinity and became a solicitor. He married
Matilda Graham at Monkstown Church on 18 Nov 1857. Matilda was the daughter of
Captain William Graham of Haddington Terrace, Kingstown and Benjamin was resident at
Barn Hill, Clonsilla. Benjamin died 30 Sep 1865 and was buried at Mount Jerome. Matilda
died died 26 Jul 1912.
1 B W Clarke only son born 26 Mar 1860 at Barn Hill was a sea captain. He died
24 Jul 1909 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
2 Matilda D S (Maud) Clarke only daughter died 1 Dec 1888 and was buried at
Mount Jerome.
2 Anna Sophia Clarke, third daughter married Rev Samuel A Walker on 30 Jun 1839 at
St Peter's Dublin. Samuel was the rector of Gallo and Drumlargin.
3 John Read Clarke born circa 1821 in Dublin son of William Clarke of Leinster Terrace
graduated AM in 1854. He was a surgeon and married Alice Rebecca Robertson from
Kent at St Thomas’s, Woolwich on 8 Nov 1876. John was resident at Adelaide House,
Glenageary near Kingstown and Alice was the daughter of Rear Admiral Robertson
of Wood Street, Woolwich, JP for the county of Kent. In 1888 the Irish Land
Commission ordered the sale of 39 acres part of the lands of Kilmacud called Priory
owned by John Read Clarke. John died 31 Dec 1895 and left 7K in personal estate.
Alice was living at Earlsfort Terrace in 1911. Her brother Thomas H S Robertson-
Shersley. Alice died 19 Apr 1919 aged 65 at 23 Eaton Square, Monkstown and was
buried at Deansgrange with her husband.
1 Alice Rebecca Clarke born 13 Jan 1878 at Adelaide House, Glenageary
married Rev Reginald Victor Bury on 8 Jun 1898 at St Paul’s Church,
Glenageary. Reginald was the third son of CM Bury, JP of Downings,
Co Kildare. Alice died 16 Jul 1902 and was buried at Deansgrange.
Reginald moved to England circa 1911.
1 Alice Edna Constance Bury born 26 Jun 1900 at Ivy Lodge,
Glenageary Hill. Alice 7 May 1911 at Sorrento Terrace and
was buried at Deansgrange.
2 John Read Clare only son born 11 Mar 1879 died 4 Oct 1911 at
Cambridge Hospital, Aldershot. He was a captain in the 1st Battalion
Norfolk Regiment. He died a bachelor from injuries received in a
wrestling game in the officer’s mess with a fellow officer. The funeral
was held at Glenageary Church and he was buried at Deansgrange.
3 Constance Edith Clarke, elder daughter born 19 Jul 1881 at Adelaide
House married Harold Trevor Marrable, MB, TCD, a physician at Isfahan,
Persia in April 1907. Harold was the elder son of Arthur Marable, barrister
at law of Druid Hill, Cabinteely. They were staying with Alice Clarke at
Sorrento Terrace in 1911. Harold was on the Medical Register in England
by 1913 and spent twenty years as medical missionary in Persia before
taking Holy orders. He was the vicar of St Matthew's, Croydon by 1926 and
retired in 1948. Constance died in 1960 and Harold died in 1965.

4 Ina Marion Clarke born 12 May 1885 at Adelaide House was a surgeon. Dr
Clarke was appointed assistant anaesthetist to the Richmond, Whitworth
and Hardwicke hospitals in 1914. Ina was left 5k in the will of Eva Maria
McLaren the English suffragist, writer and campaigner in 1921. She
moved to England in the 1920’s.
4 Edward Precious Clarke 5th and youngest son born circa 1822 was educated at
Kingstown. He married Isabella Pelham Babbington third daughter of William St
Ledger Babbington, a barrister at Monkstown on 10 Aug 1869 at Monkstown
Church. Edward died 12 Jun 1891 at 10 Tivoli Terrace.
1 Alice May Clarke born 5 May 1877 married James Henderson on 28 Apr 1896 at
Monkstown Church.
2 William Babington Clarke only son of Kingstown, Co Dublin married Ellen F A
Robertson (Paddy), eldest daughter of the late Lieutenant-Colonel W E Despard, R
MLI of Struan Blackheath on 1 Mar 1905 at St James’s Blackheath.
5 Deborah Selina Clarke, youngest daughter died at Phibblestown on 13 Jul 1845.
