Walter Henry Rooney born circa 1819 married and Mary Adelaide Stokes. He was a
proprietor of Stokes & Rooney who imported and brokered sugar from Barbados
and Porto Rico with a bonded warehouse at 5 Cope Street (Temple Bar). He became
a director of The Hibernian Bank in 1863 and was deputy governor in 1869 before
becoming governor in 1871. The Rooney family lived at Campfield circa 1857 to 1876.
In 1881 Walter became deputy governor of The Hibernia Joint Stock Banking Company.
He died 15.03.1886 at 22 Palmerston Road.
1 Alicia Rooney eldest daughter born circa 01.06.1843 at Sligo. Alicia late of St
Michael’s, Eglinton Road died 26.08.1886. Probate was granted to her
brother James.
2 James William Rooney born circa 1845 Sligo of St Michaels, Eglington Road.
James was a wine and tea merchant. James died unmarried at 46 Wellington
Road 24.04.1916.
3 John Dardis Rooney 2nd son baptised 11.02.1849 at Rathmines died 24.07.1876
aged 27 years at Campfield, Dundrum.
4 Walter Henry Rooney (twin) born 04 .10.1850 at 50 Upper Leeson Street was
baptised 06.10.1850 at Rathmines. Walter died on 24.04.1883 aged 32 years at
22 Palmerston Road.
5 Mary Lucinda Rooney (twin) born 04.10.1850 at 50 Upper Leeson Street was
baptised 06.10.1850 at Rathmines, she was living at Eglington Road with her
brother James in 1901.
6 George Stanislaus Rooney youngest son born 31.07.1852 at Upper Leeson Street
was a stockbroker of 46 Wellington Road. He married Margaret Cotton of
Drummartin Hill only daughter of William F Cotton MP of Hollywood, Dundrum on
12.08.1914. George died 28.11.1916 aged 64 years at his residence Drommartin Hill.
Margaret died 19.04.1954 aged 89 at Drummartin Hill. She left 51k in personal estate.
A window was dedicated to her memory at Holy Cross Church. No issue found.
7 Jane Rooney born circa 1848 in Sligo married John Dillon, solicitor of Booterstown
House, son of Valentine Dillon, solicitor on 20.07.1874 at Holy Cross, Dundrum.
Jane was a widow living with her brother James from 1901 to 1911.
