Atkinson family of Gortmore
Richard Atkinson* fourth son of Colonel Atkinson of Cangort, Kingscourt. He married Mary
Jane Golding on 15 Oct 1840 at Caledon Church, Co Tyrone. Mary Jane was the second
daughter of George R Golding of Limepark Lodge, Co Tyrone. He had an address in Dundrum
from 1843. Richard was a solicitor and was in partnership with John Davis Garde. The firm
of Garde and Atkinson, solicitors practiced from 7 Inn’s Quays from 1845 and later from
Merchant’s Quay. They were also shareholders in the Galway & Kilkenny Railway Company.
Richard died at Gortmore on 18 Jul 1871 and was buried at Taney. He left 30K in personal
estate. Mary Jane died 17 Jun 1889 aged 67 at 41 Upper Mount Street. Her funeral was held
at St Bartholomew’s and she was buried with her husband. She left 12K in personal estate.

4 Alicia Emily Atkinson born 9 February 1847 at 10 Upper Mount Street baptised at St
Stephen's.
5 Edward Dupre Atkinson born 2 Feb 1855 educated in Cambridge. As only son he was
called to the bar in 1878. He was living at 41 Mount Street and married Katheryn
Elizabeth L'Estrange at Parsonstown on 10 Oct 1878. Katherine was the daughter of
Edward L’Estrange a general in the Indian Armya and was born in India. In 1880
Edward took Holy orders and was appointed curate of Seapatrick. He was rector of
Donaghcloney, Warrington, Co Down from 1884 to 1919. He published An Ulster
Parish: Being a History of Donaghcloney, Warrington in 1898. All of their five children
had survived in 1911. He died at Fairholme, Helen’s Bay, Co Down in April 1937.

6 Katherine Mabel Atkinson born 26 Aug 1857 at Molesworth Street, to Richard Atkinson
of Gortmore. Kate married Rev Robert Baker Stoney on 13 April 1875 at Stephen’s
Church, Dublin. Robert was the son of Robert Johnstone Stoney. He was the incumbent
of Irishtown from 1872 to 1900 and Holy Trinity Church, Killiney from 1900. Kate died
24 Aug 1912 at a Dublin nursing home. Canon Stoney died on 11 Jul 1931 aged 91 at
Warwick Terrace, Leeson Park.
1 Alice Mary Stoney born at Gortmore 27 Feb 1876 was educated at Alexandra College.
She was a member of the Alexandra Guild and acted as head rent collector for the
Summerhill Tenement houses scheme until 1913. She died unmarried at 56
Fitzwilliam Square on 21 Jan 1960.
2 Richard Atkinson Stoney only son born 14 May 1877 at 132 Tritonville Road,
Ballsbridge. He graduated Trinity College where he studied medicine and served
his internship at Baggot Street Hospital where he later acted as visiting surgeon
and governor. In 1906 he was elected as a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons
in Ireland (RCSI). He served with the medical corps of the French army, held the
rank of major during WW1 and was awarded the Légion d'honneur for service. He
married Gladys Enid Figgis on 22 Sep 1915 at Christ Church Delgany. Gladys was
the only daughter of Arthur Wellesley Lennox Figgis of Gorse Hill, Greystones.
After the war he continued to work at Baggot Street Hospital and was a consulting
surgeon to Leopardstown Hospital and also to the Masonic Boys School. He was
elected president of the RCSI in 1930. He died on the 2 May 1966 at 56 Fitzwilliam
Square.
1 Nora Jean Stoney born 2 Oct 1920 at 56 Fitzwilliam Square married Louis
Le Brocquy in 1938 and divorced in ten years later.
2 Patience Kate Stoney born 26 Feb 1923 married Adolph Gygax on
11 Sep 1946 at St Ann's Church, Dublin. Adolph was the chancellor of
the Swiss Legation and was based at Clyde Road.
7 Emeline Caroline Atkinson born 19 Sep 1859 at Gortmore. As youngest surviving
daughter and resident at Meadowbrook, Dundrum she married Alfred St George
Hamilton at St Patrick’s Cathedral on 24 Nov 1896. Alfred was the second son of Rev
Canon William Alfred Hamilton of Dundrum.
8 May Atkinson youngest daughter born circa 1861 died at Sangster’s Hotel, Rostrevor on
24 Oct 1876.
