The sinking of the RMS Leinster
It was the largest single ever loss of life in the Irish Sea. The official death toll was 501 but it is likely that more than 550 died.
Shortly before 9am on 10 Oct 1918 the RMS Leinster left the Carlisle Pier, Kingstown bound for Holyhead. On board were 771 passengers and 75 crew. Nearly 70% of these would lose their life. The ship was an Irish ship in Irish waters and had no escort.
The RMS Leinster was one of four ships operated by the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company (all named after Irish Provinces) as both a mail and passenger service. It was a twin propelled ship with paint camouflage and it was armed. There was a postal sorting office on board, the mail was sent to England by train to Kingstown and sorted on board before arriving at Holyhead and vice versa.
The weather was fine leaving Kingstown but rough passage was expected. Just before 10amm. and about 16 miles from Kingstown people who were on deck saw a torpedo approaching the port side of the ship, a second torpedo struck the port side where the postal sorting room was located. Some were killed in the sinking but many died in lifeboats or clinging to flotsam awaiting rescue. The first torpedo ensured the destruction of the vessel, launching a second torpedo was seen as ensuring a massive loss of life for which the Germans were vilified. The passengers were a mix of civilians and military but the military onboard were not on active service and were non combatant, some were patients, others were returning to active service after furlough. The lifeboats were launched, and SOS messages were sent; after about an hour, two destroyers and other vessels arrived from Kingstown and Holyhead in an effort to save lives. Bodies were brought to the Carlisle pier. One boat arrived into the harbour with 109 survivors and the dead were being brought ashore by every boat. Twenty one of the twenty two postal sorters on duty that day were killed.
A communiqué issued by the Press Bureau for publication stating that all lives had been saved was a cruel blunder, offering hope to some, but for those who were waiting at Kingstown harbour they knew it to be a complete fabrication as they watched body after body being brought ashore. For months the question of the protection of the mail packet had been the subject of controversy.
Just four days before the attack US President Woodrow Wilson had received a message from Germany requesting a cessation of hostilities. On 14 Oct 1918, just four days after the loss of RMS Leinster, Wilson replied saying that there could be no peace so long as Germany attacked passenger ships. On the 21 Oct 1918, all U-boats were commanded to return from patrol and hostile actions against merchant vessels were prohibited. On the 11 Nov 1918 the armistice was signed, a month too late for those onboard the RMS Leinster.
A fund was opened by the Lord Mayor at the Mansion House. Dublin Port and docks subscribed 100 guineas immediately. This fund was launched to provide for the families of the those killed, many of whom had lost their bread–winner. Over the following months fundraising events were held and subscription lists published. The fund raised 27K which was distributed as needed to families. J J Nagel was the hon sec and Lady Arnott was on the distribution committee.
The Post Office fund for the Postal works raised 9.5K (nearly 6K of which came from the Mansion House fund) and was distributed as follows to 113 dependants.
Widows £225 each
Children under 8 £75
Children 8-15 £45
Children 16 – 20 £30
Unmarried dependants £75
And then an addition £13 was made to each of the 21 families as a final distribution.
In May 1919 Brigadier General ask whether an inquiry had been held into the circumstances of the loss of the Leinster. Sir Archibald Geddes replied ‘ No formal investigation has been held into the circumstances of the loss of the Leinster, and there is no government compensation scheme applicable to civilian passengers on merchant vessels damaged by enemy action during the war. The Leinster was not insured under the Government war risks insurance scheme and that he was unaware of compensation having been paid.
In July 1919 Lord Oranmore & Brown asked for an inquiry but withdrew their motion as the government could not agree to this particular case being singled out for a special inquiry. The figures proved the comparative safety of Irish sea traffics during the war when compared with other areas and that measures taken by the admiralty were commensurate with the submarine danger and the forces at their disposal.
The wreck of the Leinster is located at a depth of 100 feet, 12 miles from shore and is virtually intact. On the anniversary the wreck will come under the protection of the National Monuments Act, which covers all shipwrecks over 100 years old. One of her anchors was raised and placed on the seafront in Dun Laoghaire, a stark reminder of mans inhumanity to man.
