Henry King born 1830 at Drogheda Grammar School, graduated Trinity and studied medicine. He
passed the Indian Medical Service exams in 1855. He married Sophie Eccleston in New York on
3 Sep 1855 at Emmanuel’s Church, New York. Sophie was the daughter of Edward Eccleston, an
Irishman and linen importer of New York. They returned to Dublin for a short while and went to
India in January 1856. He was the Deputy Surgeon-General and Principal of the Medical School in
Madras. He retired in 1884 and returned to Ireland and died on 6 Nov 1897 at 52 Lansdowne Road.
Sophie died at Cambridge Terrace, Rathmines on 11 Jun 1917. Both are buried at Deansgrange.
1 Lucas White King born 8 Sep 1856 baptised at St Thomas Mount, Madras. He was educated
at Ennis College and graduated Trinity College, Dublin in 1878. He entered the India Civil
Service. He married Geraldine Adelaide Hamilton Harmsworth on 12 Feb 1891 at Bombay.
Geraldine was the eldest daughter of Alfred and Geraldine Mary Harmsworth, and she was
also sister to newspaper proprietors Alfred Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Northcliffe and Harold
Sidney Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Rothermere. Lucas was Commissioner Lahore 1901 and
of Rawalpindi in 1904. He applied for and was appointed Professor of Oriental Languages at
Trinity College, Dublin in 1905. They lived at Roebuck Hall from 1906 to 1921. He was a JP and
on the committee of the Dundrum Horticultural Society and also on the Science Committee of
the RIA. He was also a collector of first editions of Irish poetry and coins. He was knighted in
1919 and retired in 1922. Geraldine was vice president of the All-Ireland Needlework Guild
and was also associated with Dublin Castle Red Cross Hospital. They went to live at Abercorn
Place, London in 1922. He died at his shooting Lodge in Craigveigh, Aboyne, Aberdeenshire on
23 Aug 1925 and left over 5K in personal estate. Geraldine died 7 Oct 1945 at Roebuck House,
Aboyne, an estate she purchased after the death of her husband. She left 107K in personal
estate.
1 Eleanor Mary Kathleen (Nora) King born 13 Jan 1892 in India died a spinster on
17 May 1953 at Moreton Hamstead, late of Hound Tor Inn. She left 2K in personal
estate.
2 Sheila Geraldine King born 1 Aug 1893 in India married John Blyth Falls on 22 Mar 1917
at St Thomas’ Church, Dundrum. John was a Lieutenant in the Royal navy and the only
son of Thomas Falls and Christina Rose Blyth of 33 Fitzwilliam square and Leslap, Omagh,
Co Tyrone. Sheila died on 12 Jan 1921 at Lower Baggot Street from septicaemia and was
buried at Deansgrange.

3 Lucas Henry St Aubyn King born 8 Aug 1894 in India. He was educated at Winchester
and Sandhurst. He joined the 4th Battalion India and was reported wounded in January
1915. He was killed in action on 8 May 1915.
4 Enid Madeleine King born 22 Nov 1897 in India married Herbert Bland Stokes at St
Thomas’ Church, Dundrum on 5 Apr 1920. Herbert was the youngest son of Sir
Gabriel Stokes, RCSI of Morehampton Road, Donnybrook and a captain with the Royal
Inniskilling Fusiliers.
5 Cecil Harmsworth King born 20 Feb 1901 in Hertfordshire. He was educated at
Winchester and Christ Church Oxford. He married Agnes Margaret Cooke on
23 Jun 1923 at Christ Church Cathedral. Agnes was the daughter of Rev Dr Cooke, Regius
Professor of Hebrew at Christ Church Oxford. He worked for his uncles and by 1951
was chairman of the Daily Mirror Newspapers group and a director at the Bank of England.
By 1963 Cecil was chairman of the International Publishing Corporation. He divorced and
married a second time. He moved back to Dublin in 1974 and died at Greenfield Park,
Donnybrook.
6 Alfred Curzon White King (twin) born 14 Dec 1902 at Simla, India attended Winchester
College. Aged 15, he was killed when the RMS Leinster was torpedoed on 10 Oct 1916.
7 Geraldine Sophie White King (twin) born 14 Dec 1902 at Simla, India married Frederick
A Spencer, 15 Apr 1925 at Paddington, London. Frederick was son of Edward Spencer of
Bella Vista, Blackrock and Captain MC Royal Tank Corps.
