Thomas born circa 1862, son of Michael & Mary Carroll married Bridget Doyle, daughter of John
& Sarah Doyle of Lara (sic), Co Wicklow at Kilmacud Church on 11 Nov 1890. Thomas and Bridget
lived in a house owned by John Pollock of Oatlands in the village, before moving to 10 Kilmacud
Road. Thomas was a herd/gardener. Thomas died at Stillorgan on 11 Oct 1906 and Bridget
died 1 Nov 1931. Both are buried at Deansgrange.
1 Michael Carroll born 12 Feb 1893. An apprentice plumber, he joined the Royal Army
Medical Corps and was an acting Corporal. He fought in the Balkans and was awarded
the Obilic Medal (Serbia). He later served at the Knockaloe civilian internment camp on
the Isle of Man. He was killed in the sinking of the RMS Leinster and was buried at Kirk
Patrick (Holy Trinity) Churchyard, Isle of Man. His mother was sent his outstanding wages
and the war gratuity totalling £25 and ten shillings.
2 John Carroll* born 10 Nov 1894 at Kilmacud was a gardener's apprentice in 1911.
3 Mary Carroll born 1897 died a spinster on14 Feb 1982 at Clonskeagh.
4 Thomas Carroll* born 21 Dec 1898 at Kilmacud worked at Mount Anville and Dundrum
Asylum as a gardener in the 1920's. He married Susan Tapley at Holy Cross Church
Dundrum on 7 Apr 1926. Susan was the daughter of John Tapley, an RIC constable from
Wexford and Bridget Sheehy from Kerry. The couple had five children and still retain a
presence in Stillorgan. Susan died at St Michael's Hospital on 5 May 1937 aged 39 late
of Meath House, Stillorgan and was buried at Deansgrange.
1 Thomas Noel (Noel) was an insurance clerk and died a bachelor in 1959 aged 26
at 'Ivanhoe', Bird Avenue, Clonskeagh. He was buried at Deansgrange with his
mother.
5 Sarah Carroll born 6 Aug 1899 died 9 Apr 1900 and was buried at Deansgrange.
*At 2:30 am on 26 March 1921, Stillorgan was raided by the military, who arrived in about 40 lorries and
armoured cars. The whole area was cordoned off, a triangle from Galloping Green to St Joseph's
Convent to Thornhill.
Every man in the village was woken, told to get dressed and marched to Glenalbyn Road where they
were lined up. They were questioned in connection with the Irish Volunteers and were kept there
until 10 am. Ten were arrested, including John and Thomas Carroll, and driven to Portobello Barracks.
These 10 were already on a 'wanted list'. Thomas Carroll was suspected of having a .32 pistol and
having been involved in a skirmish in Sheriff Street the previous week.
