John Henry Darley (baptised Henry John) was born at Beaufield House, Stillorgan the son of Henry
Darley of Wingfield and Maria Louisa West. The descendants of John Darley are found in a large
nexus of families.
John Henry Darley was a distant cousin of Henry Darley, brewer of Stillorgan, the grandson of Alderman
Frederick Darley of Fernhill and the brother of Frederick Darley, Chief Justice and Lieut. Governor of
New South Wales. John married Mary Cerise Lees, the great granddaughter of John Lees of Blackrock
House. He was Chief Clerk of the Court of Chancery and on the committee of the Stillorgan Convalescent
Home as well as a member of the Select Vestry of Stillorgan Parish. After his marriage to Cherrie they
moved to 11 Ely Place and in 1874 to The Lodge in Foxrock and then to Ferney in 1878 just two years
before his death.

1 Sophia Louisa Lees Darley born 23 Jun 1868, at 11 Ely Place married Abraham Richard Colles,
a barrister on 2 Jun 1896 at St Brigid's Stillorgan. Abraham died in 29 Jun 1899 in Liverpool on
a return trip from Canada. Sophia died 17 Aug 1946 at 78 Eglington Road and was buried at
Mount Jerome cemetery. They had no children.
2 Mary Elizabeth Darley born 29 Jun 1869 at 11 Ely Place was involved with the Zenana
Missionary Society from early in life and went to China in 1897. She wrote two books on
her experiences there. 'The Light of the Morning,' in 1903' and 'Cameos of a Chinese City,
[Jian 'Ou], in 1917. She died a spinster at Butlington Road on 24 May 1934 and was buried in
Stillorgan graveyard.
3 Frederick Digby Darley born 30 Jun 1870 at 11 Ely Place, a solicitor married Beatrice Maud
Elizabeth Waller of Dargle Cottage on 18 Jul 1908 at Kilbride Church, Bray Co Wicklow.
Frederick died 21 Mar 1935 at Ferney and Beatrice died age 81 on 29 Jan 1964 at Kilgarth,
Foxrock.
1 Frederick John Waller Darley born 3 May 1909 at Oatlands, Stillorgan married Anne
Catherine Franks at St Andrew's Malahide on 29 Aug 1935. Anne was the daughter of
James G Franks of Roseneath, Malahide. Nigel Kinnear acted at best man. Anne
died 9 Aug 1937.
Frederick secondly married Edith Mary Horan at Stillorgan Church 31 Jul 1940. Edith
was the daughter of Hugh Horan, solicitor of Kilteragh Mansions, and the niece of
Rev George Lowe, the incumbent.
2 Richard Edward Bernard born 1 Jun 1910 at Oatlands and died at Oatlands on 9 Jul 1910.
3 Beatrice Cerise (Biddy) Darley born 3 Jun 1912 at Oatlands married Thomas Jackson,
solicitor of Farmleigh, Stillorgan on 6 Sep 1932 at St Brigid's Church Stillorgan.
4 Frances Louisa Darley married Robert Cornwall Lewis-Crosby of The Grange, Stillorgan
on 5 Oct 1940, at Christ Church, Leeson Street. Robert was her first cousin and the son
of Rev Ernest Lewis-Crosby, Dean of Christchurch Cathedral. They lived at Gaylawn
on Newtownpark Avenue.
5 Richard Howard Edward Darley died 9 Jul 1916 at 9 weeks old.
6 Annette Sybil Darley born 1 Feb 1917 married Kendal Cartwright Dixon at St Brigid's,
Church Stillorgan on 20 Dec 1938.
7 Mary Elizabeth Darley born 9 May 1920 at Ferney married John Brian Chadwick on
11 Apr 1947 in London.
4 Frances (Fanny) Emily Darley born 16 Apr 1872 at The Lodge, Foxrock. She kept a diary and
we know that in June 1891 she weighed 9st 7lbs and her height was 5'8". She married
John Merrick Lloyd of Croghan House, Roscommon on 5 Jul 1900 at St Brigid's Stillorgan.
She was a VAD in 1915 and received an MBE in 1920 for her work at the Boyle Supply Depot
during the war. John died in 1930 and Fanny returned to Stillorgan. She was very involved
in parish work and was on the Select Vestry of Stillorgan. She opened the Parish Fete at
Gaylawn in 1956. She received a long service medal from the Queen's Institute of District
Nursing service in 1961 having served over 30 years. She died 11 Feb 1969 at Lonsdale on
Avoca Avenue. Her funeral service was held at St Brigid's, Stillorgan and she was buried with
her husband at Croghan, Co Roscommon.
5 Henry Lees Darley born 18 Aug 1873 at The Lodge, Foxrock died 4 Nov 1893 at the residence of
his uncle Cecil W Darley, Erinagh, Elizabeth Bay Road, Sydney. There is a plaque in his memory at
St Brigid's Church.
6 Cerise Maria Darley born 25 Sep 1874 at The Lodge, Foxrock married Charles St George Orpen
on 27 Aug 1901 at St Brigid's Church, Stillorgan. Charles was a solicitor and they lived at Lisheens,
Carrickmines. Six chairs in her memory are in the Baptistry of Tullow Church presented by her
children. Each chair bears the name and baptism date of one of her children. Charles died
5 Mar 1939 at Portobello House and Cherrie died Good Friday in April 1950.
7 Annette Katherine (Nettie) Darley born 13 Mar 1877 at The Lodge Foxrock was a fund raiser for
the Fuh-Kien Mission. She died unmarried on 2 Jun 1958 at 78 Eglington Road and was buried
at St Brigid's, Stillorgan.
8 Cecil Hastings Darley born 13 Sep 1878 at the Lodge Foxrock. He was called to the Bar in 1903
but retired as a Barrister in 1915 and joined the National Health Insurance. He married Phyllis
Mary Mecredy at Dalkey Church on 25 Jul 1905. Phyllis was the daughter of James Mecredy.
They lived at Gortonore, Brighton Road, Foxrock and Cecil was captain of Foxrock Golf Club in
1935. Phyllis died age 72 on 2 Jul 1954 at Gortonore and Cecil died at Bloomfield, Donnybrook
in July 1955.

9 Bernard D'Olier Darley born 24 Aug 1880 at Ferney, Stillorgan. He attended Trinity College
and The Royal Indian Engineering College (Cooper's Hill). In 1903 he was appointed assistant
engineer to the Public Works Department in India. From 1906 to 1919 he surveyed, designed
and built the Mirzapur Canal Systems. He married Frances Amy Heathcote Arculus on
5 Nov 1908. He was knighted in Nov 1928 for services rendered in India and was Chief engineer
of Bohawalpur state in the Punjab. He designed and constructed the Sarda Canal. He was a
technical advisor to the home office on Air Raid precautions. He died at Tower Road, Hind Head,
Surrey in 1935.
