Alderman Frederick Darley was baptised at St Thomas' on 6 Jul 1764. He was employed as a stone
cutter for both Kings Inns and Trinity College and was the contractor for the building of the Old
Carlisle bridge. His married Elizabeth Guinness, daughter of Arthur Guinness founder of Guinness's
Brewery on 2 Apr 1785 at St Catherine's Church. In 1795 he was admitted a freeman of the city and
was Dublin sheriff in 1798 and became an alderman in 1800. He was Lord Mayor in 1808/9 and the
chief police magistrate from 1824 until 1836 when the police force in Ireland was re-organised.
He purchased lease on Fernhill in 1812 put the house was lease out for many years.
He was an 'Orangeman' and was a member of the first Dublin Lodge. He caused major offence at a
civic dinner for George IV in 1821 by proposing a toast to 'The Glorious Memory'.

4 Captain Arthur Darley, eldest son born 1790 joined the Royal Navy. He married Angel
Todd in 1828 and died 6 Aug 1851.

7 Anne Darley born 1793 married the Rt Rev Richard Darley and died Jul 1850.

11 Frederick Darley born 1798 studied architecture under Francis Johnston. He married
Penelope Andrews, daughter of Alderman Thomas Andrews in 1824. He was architect
to the Kings Inn, and based at 60 William Street from 1825. He was the Ecclesiastical
Commissioners' architect for the Archdiocese of Dublin from 1833 to 1843. He designed
the new Bethesda Chapel in 1840 after the fire in 1839 and the Munster Agricultural school
and model farm in 1859 and was the advising architect to the Dublin exhibition Winter Gardens
in 1863. He was architect with responsibility for completing the erection of the Curvilinear
Range of glass houses at the botanical gardens in Glasnevin and architect to the Royal
College of Surgeons. He died on 14 Oct 1872 at Bangor, North Wales after a long illness.
Penelope died 7 May 1886 at Cordoagh, Cavan.
12 John Darley born 28 Sep 1799 took Holy orders and married Susanna Guinness in 1832
He died 4 Dec 1836.
13 Henry Darley of Wingfield, Bray also lived at Beaufield in Stillorgan from 1833 to
1841 and had a townhouse at 11 Ely Place. He was Chief Clerk of the Court of Chancery
and retired in 1867. He was the grandson of Arthur Guinness, founder of the Guinness
brewery business.
Henry Darley born 1800 married Maria Louisa West on the 15 Dec 1829 at St Peter's,
Dublin. She was the daughter of Matthew West, High Sheriff of Dublin 1810/11 and
Maria Louisa de Blaisy Joly. Henry died 4 Jul 1883 at Fitzwilliam Square and Maria
died on 29 Nov 1873 at Wingfield, both are buried in the family vault at Mount
Jerome.
1 Rt Hon Frederick Matthew Darley, PC GCMG, born 18 Sep 1830 at 33 Leeson
Street Dublin. He married Lucilla Forest Browne (1839-1913) on 13 Dec 1860 at
Hansdon, Herts. He sailed with his wife in the Swiftsure from Plymouth in
January 1862. On 2 June that year he was admitted to the New South Wales Bar
and went on to become the Chief Justice and Lieutenant-Governor. He died in
London on 4 Jan 1910 and was buried in the family vault at Mt Jerome; memorial
services were held in England, Ireland and in Sydney, New South Wales,
Australia.

death she married Lt Col John Nicholas Coddington and died 25 Mar 1886 at
Torquay.

3 John Naper George Pollock, JP, DL, born 1861 died at Navan on 13 Feb 1905.

St Brigid's married Sir William Hartigan Barrington on 14 Mar 1859 at St Peters.
William died in 1875 and Olivia died in 1907.

Emily died in 26 Jul 1917.

7 Cecil West Darley born 1842 immigrated to Australia and became Chief Engineer of
Harbours and Rivers in New South Wales. He married first Rosanne Ives Close in
1877 at Sydney, Rosie died in 1878. Cecil then married Leila Annette Campbell at All
Saints Church, Wollahra on 14 Jan 1885. Cecil died 18 Sep 1928, the result of a traffic accident at Regent Street, London.
