Michael Cullen married Hannah Towson, daughter of John and Anne Towson of Shanganagh
at Kingstown in July 1824. Michael ran a grocers and licensed premises in Stillorgan from circa
1832. This was leased from Henry Darley of the Grange who owned most of the village land.
He died on 19 Nov 1875 at his residence and and left 18K in personal estate. Hannah took over
running the business and was granted the licence in 1876. Hannah died 20 Dec 1883 at
Stillorgan leaving just £900.

circa 1863 and they had ten children, 9 of whom were still alive in 1911. Rosanna
died 4 Aug 1888 at Newtownpark. Christopher put the pub up for auction in 1894
and retired. Christopher was a district councillor for Rathdown Rural No 1 in 1899
and was on the Council of the Deansgrange Burial Board in 1904. He had a shop and
licensed premises at Newtownpark (later known as the Playwright or Colgans) and
had a farm at Shanganagh. Christopher died at 2 Park Villas, Newtownpark on
8 Jun 1914 aged 82. He left 8K in personal estate. His son David F Cullen the informant.
1 Anastatia Cullen born 30 Nov 1865 married James Green a shopkeeper of
County Fermanagh and son of Thomas Green a farmer at Booterstown church
on 1 Feb 1894.
2 Mary Anne Cullen, second daughter born 14 May 1867 married James Joseph
Boland, son of Denis Boland and Bridget O’Leary at Kilmacud Church,
parish of Kilmacud on 17 Jan 1893. James was from County Wexford and was
working and living at 80 Grafton Street on the corner of Johnson Court from
1889 to 1893. He was a grocer and wine, spirits and tea merchant. He also had
licensed premises at Goatstown House from 1890 to 1891. He opened Stillorgan
House at the top of the hill on the corner of Kilmacud Road in 1895. The licence
was transferred to him from Miss Rydall in 1897. James had served his
apprenticeship alongside Philip Byrne of Galloping Green. James died of
complications from a broken rib on 4 Nov 1902 and left 800 in personal estate.
The licence was transferred to Mary after his death. Mary announced her
retirement and the purchase of Tigh Lorcain Hall in 1925. She died 19 Jul 1926 at
Tigh Lorcain Hall, both are buried at Deansgrange.
1 Denis Joseph Boland born circa 13 Oct 1893 at 80 Grafton Street. He was
a medical student when he married Nora Kathleen Patricia (Paddy)
O’Connor on 12 Sep 1912 at Glasthule Church and they lived at Westfield
Terrace, Blackrock. He graduated from the RCSI. Paddy died at Westfield
Terrace on 4 Oct 1917. Denis was the temporary medical officer based at
Stillorgan Dispensary. His appointment caused some issues as it was felt he
was of military age and should be on service with the RAMC but he proved
he was unfit for military service and the court case was dismissed. He died
8 May 1931 at Idrone Tce.
2 Mary (Rosa) Boland born 15 Mar 1895 at 80 Grafton Street attended
boarding school in Cabra and graduated RCSI in 1921. Rosanna Mary
married Harold C Gray, a tax inspector at Holyhead, Anglesey on 7 Oct 1925
and they moved to Harrowgate.
3 James Joseph (Jim) Boland born 3 May 1897 at Stillorgan was a medical
practitioner. He died a bachelor at Stillorgan Park Avenue on 19 Mar 1976
and was buried at Deansgrange.
4 Christopher Austin (Austin) Boland born 10 Aug 1899 at Stillorgan attended
Blackrock College. He took over the pub from his mother. He died a bachelor
late of Boland’s Stillorgan House, at St Michael’s Nursing Home in Dun
Laoghaire on 3 Jun 1964 and was buried at Deansgrange.

7 Patrick Cullen born 5 Sep 1880 at Newtownpark was a grocer’s assistant and worked
for his sister Mary at Boland’s Public House. He died a bachelor at Stillorgan House on
10 Jan 1937 and was buried at Deansgrange.
8 David Francis Cullen born 28 Nov 1882 at Newtownpark informant at his father’s death.
He was a publican & grocer of Grove View House and married Teresa Moore daughter
of Peter Moore, merchant of Stillorgan on 28 Sep 1911 at Kilmacud Church. Teresa died
30 Dec 1911 just three months after her marriage and five months after being diagnosed
with a brain tumour. She passed away at Mountain View, Dundrum late of Grove View
House and left 2K in personal estate.
David secondly married Teresa Lonergan, daughter of John Lonergan on 29 Aug 1917 at
St Agatha’s Church, Dublin. David died at Grove View House on 23 Feb 1919 and Teresa
took over the licence for the premises. She died late of Grove View House at St Joseph’s
residence for ladies, Tivoli Road on 13 Nov 1967. They were buried at Deansgrange.
