George Darley, a builder had his business premises at 5 Mercer Street. He built a house at
Ballybetagh as his country residence and later built Springfield in Kilternan. George married Jane
Johnstone of Annandale, the only daughter of an army captain in 1755 and they had at least 18
children. A freeman of Dublin city, he is credited with having built the Cathedral of St Canice in
Kilkenny. By 1806, they had moved to Stillorgan and both are buried at St Brigid's graveyard.

2 Mary Catherine Darley, born 5 Dec 1757, married Richard Guinness, a barrister and the
son of Samuel Guinness and Sara Jago. Her dowry was number 9 Mercer Street, a
rather wonderful painting depicting her with strawberry blond hair survives and is on
display at Farmleigh House. They had at least 12 children. Richard died in 1829 and was
buried with his parents in law at Stillorgan. Mary died 15 Oct 1836 at Westport.

4 Charles William Darley born 1760 and died in 1766.
5 Jane Darley born 16 Aug 1762.
6 George Darley born 1763 and died 1764.
7 Ann Darley born 1764 and died in 1766.
8 Elizabeth Darley born and died in 1765.
9 Arthur Darley born 28 Nov 1766 was a grocer with premises in Johnson's place, he
also had premises at Newtown Avenue, Blackrock. He married Mary Darley, a second
cousin and they had at least 9 children, including the poet George Darley (1795-1846),
the artist William Henry Darley and the writer Charles Frederick Darley (1800-1861).
Arthur died 7 Jan 1845 at Enniscorthy, Co Wexford.

11 Hill Darley born 1767 and died in 1768.
12 John Darley born and died 1769.
13 Henry Darley born 1 Oct 1770 was baptised at St Peter's, Dublin. He was a brewer with
premises at 3 Johnsons Court before buying the Brewery at Stillorgan prior to 1802 now
known as Brewery Road (possibly purchased from William Metcalf). We presume he
married but no evidence of his wife has been found. He rebuilt and extended the brewery
in 1805. He lived at The Grange in Stillorgan and retired from the brewery in 1837. He sold
his brewery in Bray to R & J Watkins and moved to Prospect in Roebuck for 2 years in 1839.
Although he had three sons, none of these had any sons to carry on this branch of the
Darley family. He was church warden of Stillorgan Parish Church in 1828 and in 1833. He
bought property at Crobane, Killarney in 1851 through the encumbered courts. Henry died
22 Nov 1856 and was buried at Stillorgan.
1 Henry Darley born circa 1795 married Sarah Guinness daughter of Richard
Guinness at St Peter's Church Dublin on 27 Mar 1817. There is a question mark
over the date of Sarah's given birth. This would make her nearly ten years older
than her husband. Henry qualified as a doctor circa 1825. He was attached to the
Richmond Hospital School as a Consulting Accoucheur (a male midwife) and was an
Assistant Master at The Lying in Hospital. The family lived at No 7 Kildare Street
and he was admitted a freeman of the city to the Brewer's Guild by right of marriage
in 1839. Henry died 30 May 1863, and Sarah died at 7 Kildare Street on 3 Aug 1877
aged 90. Both he and Sarah were buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Henry Darley born 3 May 1817 died 11 Dec 1857. He is given as Henry
Darley of Belle Vue, Finglas on his burial record at St George's.
2 Mary Jane Darley born circa 1818 and died 26 Dec 1897 at The Grange
Stillorgan.
3 Richard Lyons Darley born 16 Aug 1820 was living as 17 Leinster Road in 1885.
He was an accountant and his cousin Jane Dixon daughter of Thomas Dixon
was living with him at 1 South Hill Avenue in 1901. He died a bachelor on
19 Sep 1905 at 1 South Hill Avenue, Blackrock.
4 Laura Frances (Poppie) Darley born circa 1821 died 7 Mar 1901 at 39 Lower
Leeson Street and left 10K in personal estate. She bequeathed all the family
portraits to her niece Evelyn to devolve as heirlooms.
5 George Johnstone Darley born 26 Sep 1822 at Blackrock, near Stillorgan
George was a land agent and civil engineer, he married Caroline Kenny,
daughter of Courtney Kenny of Ballinrobe. George died 17 Jan 1898 at
The Grange, Stillorgan. Caroline was left the use of The Grange for her lifetime by
her sister in law, Laura Frances Darley. Caroline died 15 Feb 1924 at Oxford aged
87. George had no son and heir.

16 Mar 1889 at Lakeview, Balinrobe.
2 Evelyn Adams Darley born 6 Feb 1867, 39 Upper Leeson Street
died 25 Aug 1939 at Oxford.

4 Helen Mary Darley born 29 May 1870 at Lakeview, Ballinrobe.
5 Edythe Laura Darley born 10 July 1872 at Lakeview, Ballinrobe
married Rev Percy Scott Whelan on 17 Dec 1898 at Stillorgan
Church. Percy was the Warden at St Columba's College and the
son of Rev Robert William Whelan.
1 R Darley Whelan joined the RAF and married Barbara Cecelia
Wrey.
6 Sarah Darley born 23 Oct 1877 at Lakeview, Ballinrobe.
6 Henrietta Darley (Pennie) born circa 1824. She joined the Royal Historical &
Archaeological Association of Ireland in 1870. She died a spinster on
15 Mar 1885 at 7 Kildare Street, Dublin age 60 and was buried at Mount
Jerome. After her death at 7 Kildare Street, it along with No 8 & 9 was
acquired to build the National Museum at Kildare Street.
2 Eleanor (Ellen) Darley born circa 1800 married Robert Cassidy a pharmacist
from Bray, Co Wicklow in 1823 (ML). Robert was an apothecary of
Newtownmountkennedy and Bray in 1824. Robert died 31 Jan 1833, leaving
a widow and five children.
1 Mary Abbe Armstrong Cassidy born circa April 1824, died 1844.
2 Frances Walton Cassidy born 5 Mar 1826 at Bray died 11 Sep 1885 at
Ashknowle, Isle of Wight.
3 Henry Darley Cassidy born 18 May 1828, Bray, died in 1900.
4 Robert Armstrong Cassidy born 27 Jun 1830 at Bray was living in Liverpool
in 1873. Robert is mentioned in the Will of Henry Darley as working in
Liverpool for Messrs Bright and Gibbs. He died 18 Mar 1887 at Boxmore,
Herts.
5 Eleanor Laura Cassidy born 20 May 1832, Bray, died in 1837.
3 William Darley died unmarried on 27 Feb 1873 aged 80 at Ashburton in Devon. His
executor was his nephew Robert Armstrong Cassidy.
4 John Darley born circa 1810 took over the Stillorgan brewery in 1837 when his
father retired but he was insolvent by 1844 and committed to prison for a month. He
was buried on 19 Jan 1859, at Stillorgan Graveyard aged 48.

16 Hill Darley born 30 Aug 1774, a wine merchant of Bride Street he died a bachelor on
6 Sep 1807 and is buried at Stillorgan.
17 Frances Darley born 18 Aug 1775 married John Swail circa 1799.
1 Jane Swail born circa 1808 died unmarried at The Grange 20 Mar 1874. Her
executor was Richard Seymore Guinness.

18 Charles Frederick Darley born 20 Dec 1777 married Elizabeth Dockery on 27 Aug 1804
at St James's, they had at least 7 children and lived at Booterstown. Charles went
bankrupt in 1813 and Elizabeth died at Bay View Avenue in August 1845. Charles died
in Paris on 16 Oct 1855. He had no son and heir.
