Arthur Darley, ninth child and eldest surviving son of George Darley and Jane Johnstone
born 28 Nov 1766. Arthur Darley was a grocer of No 6 & 7 Johnston's Place. He married
Mary Darley circa 1789 and they had at least eight children. Mary was described as a
woman of singular beauty and intelligence and was the daughter of John Darley, Collector of
Newry, by his third wife Sarah Nixon of Dublin. Arthur and Mary went to America and
returned circa 1802. His office on his return was at Newtown Avenue, Black Rock. Mary’s
portrait was in the possession of J S Henderson of Falmouth, Cornwall. From 1830 they lived
at the Guinness residence at 5 Kildare Street and Arthur went to Skeam in Co Wexford and
his daughter Frances described him as 'having turned farmer' and that he was amusing
himself building a cottage and laying out the grounds for R S Guinness. Mary died on
23 Oct 1833 at 5 Kildare Street aged 65. Arthur Darley of Movilla died at Enniscorthy, Co
Wexford on 7 Jan 1845 aged 78.
1 Anna Maria (Anne) Darley born circa 1794 married Samuel S Bourcicault on
29 Jul 1813. Anne died 16 Jan 1879.
1 Donysius (Dion) Bourcicault born 26 Dec 1823 godson of Dion Lardner
entered Trinity College. He left in 1840 to go to England following the ending
of what was thought to be an affair with the older Arthur Lee Guinness. He
was an actor and dramatic author, one of his most famous plays was The
Colleen Bawn. He was a bigamist and married three times and died
18 Sep 1890 in New York. He was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery. With his
second wife Agnes Kelly Robertson, he had six children.

2 Mary Louisa Darley born circa 1795 married Charles Burton Newenham in 1815.
Mary was living at Willow Cottage, Booterstown in 1857. Charles Newenham died in
Bath at 12 Pulteney Street, aged 93, on 18 Nov 1887. Mary died 28 Mar 1880 at her
home, 40 Pulteney Street, Bath.
3 George Darley born 1795 lived with his grandfather George Darley at Springfield (a
house now part of the old Kilternan Hotel). When his parents returned from America,
he went back to live with them. He entered Trinity in 1815 and graduated in 1820.
He was a poet and mathematician. He moved to London by 1822 and published a
volume of poems called The Errors of Ectasie. He also worked for the London
Magazine and The Athenæum to supplement his allowance. His incurable stammer
got worse as he got older and he became more solitary. His health was not good and
he lived in Italy and France in the 1840’s. His uncle Henry Darley of Stillorgan, gave his
money to prolong his visit there. He died unmarried on 23 Nov 1846 at Lower Belgrave
Street, London and was buried at Kensal Green. Although he was was well known
among his peers, he was not successful as a poet during his lifetime. He was referred
to as the ‘Irish Keats’ after his death.
4 John Darley died an infant in 1797 and was buried in New York.
5 William Henry Darley born circa 1798 in Dublin, artist and recluse died 28 Jul 1857 at
Fontainebleau, France. His sister Mary Newenham (wife of Charles Burton Newenham)
was his executor.
6 Charles Frederick Darley born 1800 in America. He took Holy orders and held several
curacies in England and became Professor of English Literature in Queens College,
Cork. He died unmarried on 19 May 1861 at Leeson Street. He left 3K in personal
Street and Mary Newenham, wife of Charles B Newenham of Molesworth Street was
his executor.
7 Henry Brewster Darley born 1802 in Dublin married Jane Warren Locke of Athgoe
Park on 22 Feb 1838 at St Anne’s. Henry died 16 Nov 1846.
1 Mary Warren Darley born 9 Jan 1843 at 34 Merrion Street Upper died 1854
at Kingstown aged 10.
2 Henry Warren Darley born 19 Sep 1844 died 20 Dec 1907.
8 Frances Elinor Darley youngest daughter born circa 1807 died a spinster on
14 Dec 1832 at Torquay, Devonshire and was buried at Torre Churchyard.
