Edward Newenham born circa 1734 was the son of William Newenham, of Coolmore, Cork, and
Dorothea, daughter and heiress of Edward Worth. He attended Trinity but never graduated.
He married Grace Anna Burton, daughter of Sir Charles Burton on 4 Feb 1754. His parents died
while he was young and his guardian was his Aunt Alicia O'Callaghan who died in 1779 leaving
him money and Drumcondra Castle. Edward purchased the office of collector of the excise of
Dublin in 1764 using his wife's dowry and a complicated marriage settlement. They lived at
Granby Row before purchasing land and building Belcamp House in Balgriffen. An Irish
Politician, he was ardent supporter of the Republican Party in the United States and
corresponded with George Washington. He was injured in the collapse of the Music Hall at
Fishamble Street in 1782. Jonah Barrington described him as 'a good Irishman, but a busy, buzzing,
intermeddling member of parliament and one of the most credulous, feeble and fanatical of all Irish
intolerants'.
He is known to have fought three duels and was 'not very good with money'. In 1786 he
supported a bill for the construction of a new model gaol in Kilmainham, he became one of the
first inmates as he was unable to meet his debts. He was knighted on 10 Nov 1763 and retired
in 1797.

1 Charles Burton Newenham born 25 Jun 1794 Dublin married Mary Louisa Darley
in 1815. Mary was the daughter of Arthur Darley and the granddaughter of
George Darley. Charles worked for the Ordnance office at Pidgeon House. He
immigrated with his family to Australia in 1837. He was appointed high sheriff of
Adelaide and Auditor General of the Colony of South Australia in 1839. He
remained High Sheriff until 1856. Mary was in Ireland in 1857 and the couple
moved to England shortly thereafter. Mary died 28 Mar 1880 at Pulteney Street,
Bath and Charles died 2 Jul 1887 at 12 Pulteney Street, Bath.
1 Mary Louisa Newenham, eldest daughter married Alfred Hardy, son of
Thomas Hardy of Yorkshire in Adelaide circa September 1839.
2 Emily Grace Newenham married Charles Cooper, son of Thomas Cooper of
Henley on Thames on 7 Jul 1853 at St Michael's Church, Adelaide. Charles
was called to the bar in 1827, was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of
South Australia from 1856 to 1861 and knighted in 1857. He retired to
England and died in May 1887.
3 Anna Maria Clarissa (Annie) Newenham born circa 1820, third daughter
married James Henderson, son of Col Henderson, late of the Royal marines,
at St John's Church Adelaide in 7 Jun 1845.
4 William Henry Newenham, eldest son born 4 Jan 1824 at Pigeon House
Fort became a customs officer and died 16 May 1854 aged 28 at Hobart.
5 George Cobb Newenham was a Deacon in Tasmania from 1846 to 1849. He
married Lucy Gell, third daughter of the late Sherbrooke Gell, RN at The
Chapel, Darlington Park, Macquarie on 16 Feb 1852. George died
15 Feb 1853 on board The Sydney Packet on the Brisbane river.

at Westland Row.
7 Edward Worth Newenham born 22 Feb 1834 at Cumberland Street to the wife
of C B Newenham of Stillorgan was baptised at St Brigid's Stillorgan on
20 Apr 1834. He died on 25 Feb 1854 in the wreck of the schooner Dolphin,
bound from Port Davey to Hobart Town aged 20.

2 Captain W T Newenham, Commander Royal Navy was left a cottage in Lyme Regis
in the Will of his brother Charles in 1888 on retiring from the navy he took on the
post of chief officer of the Lyme Regis Coastguard Station.

1 William Burton Newenham born 1806 married Sarah Jane Waring, on 14 May 1830 at St
Peters Church, Dublin. Sarah Jane was the daughter of Richard & Elizabeth Waring and
the adopted daughter of Samuel Pittar of Fitzwilliam Square Dublin. The couple lived at
North Bank, Regent’s Park, London after their marriage. Sarah aged 24 died on 4 May 1831
while pregnant at the home of her mother and step-father in Brixton, Surrey.
William abducted Frances Wortham Louisa, a 15 year old lady of fortune. A reward was
offered for his apprehension. He was arrested, charged and brought to trial where he was
found guilty and sentenced to two years imprisonment. Frances Louisa was made a Ward
of Court. William later appealed his conviction as they had married at Gretna Green on
15 Oct 1843 and that Frances should not been made a ward of court. His appeal was not
granted and he remained in prison until June 1846. Jane Wortham petitioned the courts to
dissolve, rescind, and make void the marriage of William Burton Newenham and her
daughter, so as to enable her to marry again. Frances married William Marshall, an artist in
1857 at Dublin’s Registrar’s Office declaring herself a widow. The couple lived at Foxrock Villa
on Torquay Road and had three children before moving to England. William died at Reigate
in 1877.
