Samuel John Pittar born circa 1776, eldes son of John Pittar of Cullenswood and Jane Pepper.
He was an attorney and notary public of 157 Abbey Street. He married Margaret McNeil circa
June 1809 and they 10 St Stephen's Green in November that year. He asked to be struck off on
being called to the bar in 1813. Margaret died in January 1815.
The Estate in Booterstown of Samuel John Pittar included South Hill House, Rokeby, Marmion Lodge,
Hamilton Cottage, Netley, Arbutus Lodge, South Hill Cottage, Eden Villla, St Aubyn’s and a House at
Fitzwilliam Square. Samuel Pittar, 'for the purpose erecting these and other residences of a similar
class, opened up the avenue now known South Hill Avenue circa 1830'.
1 John Pittar eldest son born circa 1812 married his step sister Frances Maria Waring, daughter
of late Richard Waring of Belfast on 20.12.1834 at St Martin in the Fields, London. The family
went to Calcutta and John died there on 18.03.1842 aged 30 years. After John’s death Frances
returned to London with her children and met Father Thomas Louis Connolly O F M Capuchin.
She and her three children were converted into the Catholic Faith. Her family were shocked
and because at that time under British law the children could be taken by the courts and
given to Protestant relations, Frances gathered some of her fortune and went to live in
Quimper, France. Frances published a paper entitled ’A Protestant converted to Catholicity
by her Bible and Prayer Book’. Frances died on 27.12.1889 in Belgium aged about 80.
1 Marmion Pittar baptised 17.12.1835 at St Martin in the Fields.
2 Joseph Marmion Pittar born 06.09.1836 at Brixton. Joseph became a Jesuit priest and
died on 07.07.1889 near Shanghai.
3 Frances Maria Sarah Pittar born 25.12.1838 Calcutta.
2 Margaret Pittar born circa 1814. As second daughter she died at Temple Hill, Blackrock in July
1822.
He married secondly Elizabeth relict of Richard Waring an Attorney of Lisburn and Belfast on 20.05.1817.
Elizabeth was a widow with five children*. A daughter from his first marriage died at Temple Hill so it may
have been from here that he entertained the balloonist Edmund Johnston when he descended in the area
on his second attempt to cross the channel. In November 1830 Samuel advertised his house in at Fitzwilliam
Square for sale and or for rent as he intended going to reside in London. He also put his pew in St Peter's
up for sale. He died at St Aubyn's on South Hill Avenue on 15.09.1845 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
Elizabeth died 15.05.1865 aged 80 at Clarinda Park, Kingstown and was buried with her husband.
3 Richard Waring Pittar born 06.11.1817. As eldest son he married Mary Anne Smith
daughter of late Thomas Pendarves Smith MD on 31.08.1846 at the Parish Church, Walcot,
Bath. Richard a barrister at law died on 17.09.1890 formerly of Enniskerry, Wicklow and late of
Ryde and Shanklin in the Isle of Wight. Mary Anne died on 20.04.1894 at 10 St Michael’s Road,
Bedford.
1 Arthur Waring Pittar only son born circa 1847 died on 01.05.1853 aged 5½ years and is
buried at Mount Jerome with his grandparents.
2 Sarah (Sissie) Waring Pittar only surviving child married Sydney Aylmer De Morgan
younger son of George De Morgan of Bouldnor, Isle of Wight on 26.10.1886 at St
Saviour’s, Shanklin, Isle of Wight.
3 Ada Mary Pittar youngest child born circa 1856 died 17.11.1882 aged 26 years at
Quinsboro Road, Bray and is buried at Enniskerry.
4 Eveline Pittar second daughter born 14.09.1819 died 12.10.1829 aged 10 years at Fitzwilliam
Square.
5 Matilda born circa 1820, as eldest daughter married Thomas Williams of Berbice son of
Richard Williams on 25.04.1838 at the Parish Church of St Marylebone. Thomas died 13.06.1875
and Matilda died 04.04.1897 of 37 Grove End Road, St John’s Wood.
6 Jane Pittar born 23.04.1823 died unmarried on 19.08.1888 aged 65 years at 2 Alma Road
Monkstown and is buried at Mount Jerome. Informant: John Smyth.
7 Maria Catherine Pittar born circa 1826 married John Smyth a widower of Monkstown son of
John Montague Smyth on 06.09.1848 at Booterstown Parish Church. Maria died on 12.04.1851
aged 25 years and John died on 25.02.1891. They are buried at Mount Jerome.
8 Rev Arthur Charles Pittar born August 1827 married Martha Roseingrave Macklin daughter of
Rev Roiseingrave Macklin of Stillorgan on 28.09.1854 at Christ Church, Parish of St Werburgh,
Derby. Arthur died 24.05.1899 and Martha died 04.02.1905. They are buried at Great Malvern,
Worcestershire.
9 Henry Hamilton Pittar born circa 04.02.1829 at Fitzwilliam. Henry a Civil Engineer married Anne
Arthur daughter of Benedict Arthur on 14.08.1852 at St John’s Church, Notting Hill.

1 Sarah Jane Waring born circa 1807 daughter and co-heiress of Richard Waring of Lisburn, step-
daughter of Samuel married William Burton Newenham on 14.05.1830 at St Peter’s Church.
Sarah died on 04.05.1831 in London. William Burton Newenham was charged with attempting
to shoot Samuel John Pittar his father-in-law In April 1831, a native of Ireland, he was the
grandson of Sir Edward Newenham of Belcamp. He had formerly mixed in good society and
had squandered a considerable fortune. William was charged with abducting a minor Frances
Louisa Wartham whom he married on 15.10.1843 at Gretna Green. In 1844 he was sentenced to
2 years imprisonment at Cold Bath field prison.
2 Isabella Margaretta Waring born circa 1811 daughter of late Richard Waring married Lieut
Col St Aubyn Molesworth of the Royal Engineers son of late Rev John Molesworth Feb 1833 at
St Matthew’s Church, Brixton near London.St Aubyn died on 19.09.1858 at Stoke Dameral and
Isabella died on 28.03.1887 at 6 Osborne Villas, Stoke, Devonport
3 Frances (Fanny) Maria Waring daughter of late Richard Waring of Belfast married her step
brother, John Pittar eldest son of Samuel John Pittar on 20.12.1834 at St Martin in the Fields,
London.
4 Anna Waring born circa 1816 daughter of Richard Waring of Lisburn and step-daughter of
Samuel married Henry John Manley of Lisburn youngest son of Captain Manley, Sidbury,
Devonshire on 26.07.1843 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. Henry a Bank Manager died suddenly
on 28.04.1875 aged 64 years at the Northern Bank House, Railway Street, Lisburn and Anna
died on 30.01.1896 aged 80 years at 18 University Square, Belfast.
5 Margaret Waring born circa 1816 youngest daughter of late Richard Waring married Thomas
John Pittar on 13 Jan 1842 at St George’s Church, Hanover Square. The family lived in Kent.
Margaret died on 31.03.1883 aged 67 years at Brighton and Thomas late of the Secretary’s
Office, Board of Customs died 07.01.1900 aged 87 years at 3 Upper Westbourne Villas, Hove,
Brighton.
