Macklin family of Stillorgan Cottage
Gerard Macklin born circa 1768 son of the Rev Gerard Macklin of Co Meath and Elizabeth Broughton.
He attended Trinity and was appointed State Surgeon on 22 Oct 1806, an office created by patent in
1774. He was also made a Freeman of the City by grace the same year. He married Martha Lloyd on
6 May 1790 at St Peter's Church. He was president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and a
member of the RDS, his proposers were General Vallancey, and Arthur McGwire. He lived at York
Street before moving to 1 Harcourt Place in 1802. He had, as his country residence, Stillorgan
Cottage which from 1821 was for up for sale. He was appointed Surgeon to the Magdalen Asylum in
Leeson Street in 1826 and lectured at Mercers Hospital from 1796 until 1830. His salary as State
Surgeon was reduced in 1831 from 365 pounds to 100 pounds along with other employees of the
Castle after a finance review led by Lord Althorp. Martha died at Lake Park, in Co Wicklow on
8 Mar 1840 and Gerard died 28 Jul 1848 at Lake Park House, Roundwood Co Wicklow.

1 Rosingrave Macklin baptised 15 Mar 1792 at St Peters married Jane Audouin Lamb, daughter
of George Audouin Lamb of East Park, Wicklow at Newcastle Church on 9 Feb 1820.
Rosingrave took Holy orders and was appointed Rector of Newcastle, he was transferred to
Lusk and established a Protestant school at Rush during his incumbency. In 1834, he and his
wife were subjected to highway robbery at gunpoint on the road from Dublin to Swords. He
moved to Derby in 1835 with his six daughters as the curate of St Werburgh's before
becoming incumbent of Christ Church in 1841. It is reported that he preached 'furiously' in
Derby, against the Queen, the ministry, the devil, and the Pope. He died at Derby 12 Nov 1865.
1 Martha Roseingrave Macklin born circa 1823 married the Rev Arthur Charles Pittar curate
of Alfreton, Derbyshire, and son of Samuel Pittar of Booterstown. Martha a widow died
on 4 Feb 1905 and left 34K in personal estate.
2 Gerard Macklin, infant son died on 2 Jun 1824 and was buried at Chapelizod.
3 Charlotte Roseingrave Macklin third daughter born 1825 died in 26 Feb 1863 in
Derbyshire.
4 Georgina born 1828 married Charles Henry Oakes a colliery owner. Georgina died a widow
on 30 Jan 1913.
5 Sophia Macklin fifth daughter born 1830 taught at Christ Church school for 40 years. She
died on 30 May 1887 at Derby and left 9K in personal estate.
5 Rosina Margaret born 1831 died 8 Aug 1884 in at Oxford Villas, Derby. She left over 10K
of personal estate in both Ireland and England.
6 Jemima Macklin born 1832 married Arthur Godley Crewe, nephew of Harpur Crewe in
1861. Jemima died a widow on 9 Jul 1916 at Southsea. She left 7K in personal estate and
probate was granted to Frances Harpur Crewe, spinster,
7 Frances Arbella Macklin youngest daughter born 1838 died 19 Sep 1885.
8 Gerard Roseingrave Wilson Macklin born 1843. Major G R W Macklin, late of the 99th Duke
of Edinburgh's regiment died 3 Jul 1896 at St James's Place, London.
2 William Frederick, second son baptised 11 August 1798 at St Peter's died at Harcourt Place
27 Dec 1830 and was buried at Chapelizod.
3 John Wilson Macklin born York Street baptised 3 May 1800 at St Peters.
4 Thomas Wilson Macklin, third son born circa 1801 conferred Captain of the Battle-axe Guard (similar
to the Beef-eaters in England and disbanded in 1831) by the Lord Lieutenant in 1820. The uniform
of the Battle-axe Guards were quite spectacular. It consisted of a scarlet jacket with a blue collar,
both jacket and collar were edged with gold lace. It had gold epaulettes attached by blue straps
which were embroidered with gold. Thomas died in June 1848 at Lake View House, Co Wicklow and
was buried at Chapelizod.
5 Jane Elizabeth Macklin, second daughter married 31 Mar 1824 at St Mark’s Church, the Rev Robert
Handcock, Domestic Chaplin to the Right Hon Viscount Castlemaine and Curate of St Thomas's
parish. The family lived at 31 Marlborough Street. Jane Elizabeth died at Marlborough Street on
18 Dec 1838.

7 Martha Macklin, third daughter married Frederick Beatty, fourth son of the Rev John Beatty of
Molesworth Street at St Anne’s Church on 13 Feb 1830. The Beatty family were the owners of
Lake Park. Martha died on 21 Jun 1837.
1 John Williams Beatty born 10 May 1831 at Lower Pembroke Street married Ida Elizabeth
Lockwood on 3 Feb 1855.
2 Son Beatty born 10 July 1833 at Pembroke Street.
Frederick married secondly Mary Anne Bryan in 1848 at Dunganstown, Co Wicklow and had a
further five children.
