Michael Murphy born circa 1817 married Margaret Lawless, daughter of Philip Lawless at the Pro
Cathedral on 11 Oct 1840. Michael was a JP and Director of W B and C Palgrave and Co of 17
Eden Quay, Dublin. They lived at Altadore on Avoca Avenue from 1863 to 1869 and then at 35
Corrig avenue. He was President of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the
Hibernia Bank and of the Dublin Wicklow & Wexford Railway Co and also a director of Boland's
Bread which was owned by Rev Dr Donnelly, Bishop of Canea, who officiated at their family
weddings. Margaret died 8 Jan 1886 and Michael died 11 Feb 1894 at 21 Merrion square and
left 103K in personal estate. Both are buried at Deansgrange.
1 John Murphy eldest son born circa 1862 married Anne (Nannie) Byrne, daughter of Peter
Byrne of Peafield, Mount Merrion Avenue on 29 Nov 1865 at Booterstown Church. He was
appointed a director of the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company in 1894. The family lived
at Avondale where Nannie died on 21 Jul 1897. She was buried at Deansgrange. John
died 25 Oct 1924 at Avondale, Avoca Avenue and was buried with his wife.

Fitzpatrick, daughter of Thomas Fitzpatrick of Chilcomb, New Ross on 17 Oct 1894
at St Mary’s, New Ross.
2 Mary Ann Murphy, eldest daughter born circa 1869 married Judge Daniel Francis
Browne from Limerick at St Mary’s Booterstown on 30 July 1896. Daniel died on
21 Jan 1913 at Tralee. Mary died at 1 Ovoca Terrace 22 Feb 1936.
1 Dorothy Browne only child born 17 Feb 1902 at 88 Upper Mount Street.
3 Joseph Xavier Murphy born 3 Jan 1874 at Frankfort Ave. He joined the British army
and fought during WW1. He was a partner in Palgrave, Murphy, & Co, steamship
office and agents for the Liverpool underwriters' association. He was a director of
Bank of Ireland, a commissioner of Irish lights, director of the Guardian Insurance
Co, director of Great Southern Railways, and director of the Dublin Alliance and
Consumers' Gas Co. In September 1927 general election he was returned as a TD
for Dublin County but lost his seat in 1932. Of Avondale House he married Norah,
daughter of George Fottrell, on 12 Jun 1900 at Ballybrack Church. Joseph died
12 Oct 1937 at his home, Ashurst, Mount Merrion Ave, Blackrock, Co Dublin, leaving
personal estate of 28K. Norah died 29 Jun 1966 at Santa Anna, Ailesburys Road.
Both were buried at Deansgrange.

2 James Joseph Murphy second son born circa 1843 married Bridget Jane (Cissie) Norman,
daughter of Francis Norman, Solicitor of 16 Granby Row on 5 Aug 1869 at the Pro Cathedral.
He was chief partner in the firm of Messrs Palgrave, Murphy, & Co of Eden Quay. They lived at
Altadore and James was appointed a director of the Royal Bank in 1894. He was knighted in
1902 and created Baronet of Altadore on 9 October 1903. He was a JP and DL for Dublin and
president of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce in 1902/3. A keen yachtsman, he was a member
of the Royal Irish Yacht Club. They had five daughters, one of whom was a nun. Cissie died
27 Sep 1921 aged 77 and Sir James died 16 Feb 1922 at Yapton, Monkstown aged 79 and both
were buried at Deansgrange.

5 Frances Ellen Murphy youngest daughter born 13 Aug 1876 at Altadore married Arthur
Herbert Stack Orpen of Oriel, Stillorgan at Holyhead on 7 Jan 1926 and they moved to
Brooklawn, Stradbrook after their marriage. Frances died in 1956 and is buried with
her parents at Deansgrange.

Maria Freeman of Castlewood Avenue and daughter of the late John Freeman and Mary Freeman
at the RC Church in Rathgar on 4 Sep 1977. They had three children. He was MD of Michael
Murphy & Co of, Coal Merchants of Dublin Liverpool and Swansea. Mary died aged 26 at
Duncairn Terrace Bray on 1 Jan 1882 aged 26. Michael was created Baronet of Wyckham on
3 Feb 1912. They lived at 88 Merrion Square West and had a country house at Wyckham,
Dundrum. Sir Michael died Good Friday 1925 at Wickham and left 190K in personal estate.
1 Beatrice Mary Murphy born 6 Jul 1878 and of Sylvan Lodge, Terenure was baptised at
St Josephs. She married Sir Michael O’Loghlen of Drumconora, Co Clare and son of Sir
Bryan O’Loghlen at Holy Cross Church Dundrum on 16 Jan 1918. Sir Michael died
23 Mar 1934 at Alton Grange, Foxrock and Beatrice died 5 Feb 1953. Both were buried
at Deansgrange. They had no children.
2 Arthur Dominic Murphy born 4 Aug 1879 at Sylvan House ,Terenure died a bachelor on
7 Oct 1918 at Wyckham, Dundrum. The Rosary widow at Holy Cross Church was
commissioned in his memory.
3 George Francis Murphy born 31 Mar 1881 at Price of Wales Terrace in Bray married
Frances Daveren, daughter of Richard Davoren, a solicitor of Friarsland, Dundrum at
Holy Cross Church, Dundrum on 8 Jan 1913.
4 Catherine Murphy born circa 1855 married Edward Egan, wine merchant of Ruby Lodge, Blackrock
and son of the late Patrick Egan, a merchant on 8 Feb 1878 at Monkstown RC Church. They had
six children. They lived at 21 Merrion Square for most of their married lives.
