Richard Edward (Birdy) Davoren born circa 1842 in Co Clare son of Richard Davoren and Ellen
O’Brien. He was awarded a gold medal and admitted attorney in 1867. He worked as a
solicitor from offices at Rutland square before moving to 47 Mountjoy Square with offices at
13 Dame Street in 1875. His mother died 14 Mar 1877 at 37 Rutland Square aged 74 and was
buried at Glasnevin. He married Catherine (Ina) Nugent daughter of Ambrose Nugent,
solicitor, and Margaret Aylmer of 71 Gardiner Street and Killasonna House, Granard on
26 Apr 1879 at St Mary’s, Pro Cathedral, Malboro Street. Richard was the liquidator for the
Dublin Whiskey Distillery Company Ltd in 1891. He was a large share holder in Dublin Distillers
Ltd and was co-opted on to the board of it in October 1900. He was chairman by 1903. The
company struggled financially and he faced a no confidence vote in 1911 and resigned in 1914.
The family lived at Friarsland from 1886 until 1914 when they put the house and contents up
for sale. Catherine regularly gave supper parties at Friarsland catering for up to 200 guests
with dining and dancing into the wee small hours. Richard died 8 Oct 1917 and was buried at
Glasnevin. Probate to John McGonigal. Catherine died at Booterstown on 19 Nov 1932 and
was buried at Glasnevin.
1 Margaret Mary (Dolly) Davoren eldest born 27 Feb 1880 Dublin at 47 Mountjoy Square
baptised at the pro Cathedral married John McGonigal at Holy Cross, Dundrum
25 Apr 1901. John was a barrister living at Mount Street Crescent and ninth son of
Michael McGonigal of Sydenham, Co Down. John became a judge on the Northern
circuit by 1938. They had seven children, three boys and four girls. John died in July
1943 aged 73 at Larne and Margaret died on 9 Jun 1953 at Corrig Road, Dun Laoghaire.
1 Richard (Dick) McGonigal born 14 Feb 1902 at 8 Mount Street Crescent was
educated at Belvedere College and Clongowes Wood and graduated the National
University. He married Annette Pilkington on 24 Aug 1924 at University Church.
He was called to the Bar in 1925 and the Inner Bar in 1840. Later, Richard became
Ireland's first judge on the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. He
died at Elgin Road on 24 Jan 1964 survived by his wife.
2 Ina Mary McGonigal born 4 Apr 1904 at 8 Mount Street Crescent lived with her
parents at Windsor Gardens and was unmarried in 1943.
3 Margaret Mary (Peggy) McGonigal born 28 Sep 1907 in Dublin. She married
Charleton Lochinvar Gordon Stewart in August 1931. Charleton was with the West
Yorkshire Regiment.
4 Catherine Mary (Cattie) McGonigal born 30 Apr 1909 at 8 Mount Street Crescent.
She married Herbert Humphrey Stackpool on 7 Aug 1929 at Booterstown Church.
Humphrey was an army officer (West Yorkshire Regiment) and the son of Charles
Stackpool.
5 Letitia Mary Frances (Letty) McGonigal born 30 Jun 1911 at Mount Street Crescent.
She married John (Jack) Carson) a colonel in the RUR.
6 Ambrose Joseph McGonigal second son born 22 Nov 1917 at 18 Herbert Street.
He married Patricia (Paddy) Taylor on 19 Dec 1941 at the Church of St Columcille/
Columbkil, Newtownards Road. Paddy was the only child of R J Taylor of Gilnakirk,
Knock and Molly Smith of Co Cavan. He initially served with the Royal Ulster Rifles
(special service troops) and in March 1944, while operating with the 12 Commando,
Lieutenant (temp captain) McGonigal was awarded the Military Cross and later in
the same year was awarded a bar to the MC. From 2 Jun 1944 onwards, he fought
with the Special Boar Service (SBS) throughout the Balkans before rejoining the RUR
for deployment in Egypt and Palestine at the end of the War. After the War he
practiced as a barrister in Northern Ireland, being called to the Inner Bar in 1956
then appointed a judge of the High Court in 1968. In 1975, Ambrose was appointed
to the Court of Appeal and the Privy Council, as which time he was also knighted.
7 Eoin Christopher McGonigal youngest son born 5 Dec 1920 at Herbert Street.
Having first served with the RUR, Eoin joined 11 Commando and fought in Syria
before operating as a parachute lieutenant in the Special Air Service Brigade (the SAS).
He was killed in action (in a SAS raid against a German airfield) in Libya on
17 Nov 1941. He is remembered on the Alamein Memorial.
2 Ellen Rose (Ellen Eily) Davoren born 20 Sep 1881 at Hillside Howth died 25 Feb 1885 at
47 Mountjoy Square and was buried at Glasnevin.
3 Richard Nugent Daveron born 21 Aug 1882 at 47 Mountjoy Square baptised at the Pro
Cathedral died 22 Mar 1833 at 47 Mountjoy Square and was buried at Glasnevin.
4 Ina Mary Daveron born 15 Oct 1883 at 47 Mountjoy Square baptised at the Pro
Cathedral. She joined the Sacred Heart religious order and was Mother Superior when
she died at Mount Anville Convent on 25 Jun 1965.
5 Mary Ellen Cecilia Davoren born 4 Jul 1885 at 47 Mountjoy Square baptised at the Pro
Cathedral. She died a spinster at Talbot Lodge, Linden Nursing Home on 5 Feb 1959 after
a long illness and was buried at Glasnevin.
6 Esmay Davoren born 9 Dec 1886 at Friarsland married Thomas F O’Farrell on 26 Oct 1911
at Holy Cross Dundrum. Thomas was a medical doctor and son of the Surgeon General
Thomas O’Farrell and Maria Roche. They lived at 26 Upper Leeson Street. Thomas
became a Pathologist at St Vincent's Hospital an Examiner in Pathology, Apothecaries' Hall,
Dublin, First Assistant in Pathology, University College, Dublin, bacteriologist to Dublin
County Council and was a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Medicine.

Clongowes Wood College, UCD and at King’s Inns, Dublin. He served with the Royal Field
Artillery in WW1 and attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was killed in action 18 Jul 1917
at Ypres, Flanders and was buried at Poperinghe New Military Cemetery, West Vlaanderen,
Belgium. He is commemorated on the War Memorial at St Mary’s Church on Haddington
Road and the Great War Memorial at Clongowes College.
8 Frances Mary Davoren born 26 Jun 1891 at Friarsland baptised at Holy Cross, Dundrum
married George Murphy son of Sir Michael Murphy of Wyckham at Holy Cross Church on
8 Jan 1913.
9 Carmen Mary Davoren born 12 Jul 1893 at Friarsland. She joined the British Legion –
Women's section and as a first class superintendent was awarded an OBE in 1919. She
died a spinster at Clarinda Park on 13 Jul 1980 and left 19K in personal estate.
