John Goodwin married Ellen Margaret Hanlon circa 1900. By 1901 they were living on the Kilmacud
Road in Stillorgan where they had a grocery/tobacco/sweet shop. A cousin, Mary O'Hanlon who
worked at the Irish Sweep Stakes lived with the family.
1 John Michael (Johnny) Goodwin born 28.09.1900 at the Rotunda Hospital. It is thought that
this is the same John Goodwin who worked at St John of God in the 1920's. In 1929 John
Goodwin was a motor-van driver for the BB Toffee Factory owned by the Devlin
family of Westbury. He was living at 61 Lower Kilmacud Road (Providence House) until his
death in 1988.
2 Robert Joseph (Robbie) Goodwin born 26.02.1902 at Cullen's Cottages. Robert ran a
newsagents/tobacconist on Kilmacud Road from 1940 to 1950. He died unmarried on
11.08.1959 aged 57 years at the Royal City of Dublin Hospital, late of 61 Lower Kilmacud
Road.
* Brother Benignus Callan of St John of God interviewed John Goodwin in 1973. John was on
the hospital staff in the 1920's and a member of the 'Old IRA'. He confirmed a story relayed to
Brother Benignus by William Traynor.
'During the troubled times in Ireland from 1918 to 1922, secret drilling the IRA took place in the
cemetery of St John of God, unbeknownst to the Brothers. Rifles were hidden behind the old
wooden altar which used to be in the cemetery chapel. One of the leaders was a member of the
hospital staff. One day, one of the brothers saw the men drilling and he was warned to say
nothing.'
