Ferrier family of Knockmaroon, Castleknock and Annefield, Dundrum
Alexander Ferrier born circa 1872 was the son of Alexander Ferrier and Janet Leckie Black.
He married Mary Clarke at St Peters on 21 Jun 1808 at St Peter’s Church. In 1809 he was a
silk merchant of 56 Fishamble Street in partnership with his brother James Ferrier and his
brother in law James Pollock. The family lived at Charlemont Mall, Portobello from 1816
until 1823 and were in Knockmaroon by 1832.
In 1832 Messrs Ferrier and Pollock purchased Powerscourt House, which was the government’s
old Stamp office in William Street for £5000, (now known as the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre).
He was a director of the Dublin Oil Gas Light Company and the National Assurance Company of
Ireland and was a generous contributor to a number of Dublin charities. Ferrier Pollock traded
from 59 William Street until October 1980 when receivers were appointed.
Mary died 4 Aug 1845 at Knockmaroon and was buried at Powerscourt demesne. Alexander died
10 Jul 1867 at Knockmaroon and left 30K in personal estate and was buried with his wife.
1 Alexander Ferrier only son born circa 1810 and of Castleknock married Euphemia Laurie,
of Bath Place and daughter of George Laurie at St Marys Minster, Reading on 10 Jul 1838.
He died at Knockmaroon on 4 Jun 1890 and left 13K in personal estate.
1 Anna Laurie Ferrier, eldest daughter born circa 1840 died a spinster at Lymehurst,
Blackrock on 21 May 1913.
2 Euphemia Gertrude Ferrier born 2 Dec 1843 baptised at St Peter’s Dublin died a
spinster at Dal Riada on 27 Feb 1927.
3 Mary Isobel Ferrier born 10 Jan 1846, baptised at St Peters Dublin married the Rev
Ernest Frederick Letts. Ernest died 24 Mar 1904 at Bournmouth and Mary died at
Dal Riada, Blackrock on 13 Jun 1933.
1 Mary Felitia S Letts born 12 Dec 1875 at Oxford.
2 Dorothea Margaret Letts born 30 Dec 1877 at Oxford.
3 Winifred Letts born 10 Feb 1882 at Higher Broughton was a poet, author
and playwright. She married William Verschoyle on 5 May 1926 at St
Stephen's Church. William died 26 Dec 1943 aged 65 at 19 Fitzwilliam
Square and Winifred died on 7 Jun 1972 at Tivoli Nursing Home, Dun
Laoghaire.
4 Maria Anne Maxwell Ferrier of Knockmaroon married William Forbes Laurie of
Knockmaroon and son of William Forbes Laurie at Castleknock Church on
11 May 1872.
5 Alexander Ferrier born at Belle Vue Park in October 1848 died 30 Apr 1850 at
Knockmaroon.
6 Alexander Ferrier Ferrier eldest son born 4 Apr 1851 at Knockmaroon was educated
at St Columba’s and Trinity College. He married Elizabeth Kathleen Hitchcock, daughter
of Henry Hitchcock, solicitor of 2 Rutland Square and Saintville, Killiney at St George’s
Church on 13 Sep 1887. He was a director, senior partner and chairman of Ferrier
& Pollock of 59 William Street and lived at 53 Eglington Road and Ash Hurst Killiney.
He was a governor of Mercer’s Hospital. He died on 26 Mar 1923.

married Captain Richard Fielding Morrison R H A, eldest son of Lieut Col Hobart
Morrison of Molesey House Surrey in London in February 1916.
2 Kathleen Marion Ferrier youngest daughter born 23 Dec 1898 at
Knockmaroon married Hugh Reginald White, sixth son of W M Wright MD of
Ulverton, Dalkey 28 July 1925 at Sandford Church.
7 Ernest William Buxton Ferrier born 13 Dec 1853 at Knockmaroon married Mary Blood,
daughter of John Lloyd Blood of Longford Terrace at Monkstown on 15 Jan 1883. They
had two children and lived at Annefield, Dundrum from 1911 to 1933. He was a
director of Ferrier and Pollock of 59 William Street. He died 15 Jun 1933 at Annefield,
Dundrum.
1 Alexander Herbert Buxton Ferrier, eldest son born 23 Oct 1883 at
Knockmaroon, Castleknock. He graduated Trinity and served in WW1 Royal
Army Service Corps. He married Beata Elizabeth Mary Hayter Stevens from
Rochester, England, daughter of George and Ada Stevens at Pendicton, British
Columbia on 3 Apr 1913. He drowned with his one year old daughter Sheila in
the sinking of the Lusitania on 7 May 1915. It is thought that Elizabeth survived
the sinking.

2 Sophia Margaret Ferrier, eldest daughter born circa 1811 married the Rev James Hogan of

3 Janette Rebecca Ferrier second daughter born circa 1813 married Fleetwood Churchill of St
Stephen’s Green at Castleknock Church on 21 Feb 1832.
4 Maria Anne Maxwell Ferrier, third daughter born circa 1814 married George Bott Churchill
Watson, MD of Derby at Castleknock Church on 26 Aug 1835. Mary died 19 Sep 1840 and was
buried at Powerscourt.
1 Isabella Watson, eldest daughter married Rev Joseph R McCaul, eldest son of Rev Dr
McCaul, Rector of Magnus the Martyr at Castleknock church on 24 May 1855.
5 Isabella Caroline Ferrier, fourth daughter born circa 1815 died 21 Nov 1836 at Bellevue Park,
Knockmaroon and was buried at Powerscourt demesne.
6 Charlotte Augusta Mary Ferrier born 17 Oct 1817 died 30 Jan 1891 at 32 Pembroke Road and
was buried at Powerscourt demesne.
7 Jemima Georgiana Ferrier married Gilbert Burns of Knockmaroon Lodge at Castleknock
Church in October 1842.
8 Mary Clarke Ferrier married William John Beasley of Torquay, Devonshire at Castleknock
Church on 30 Sep 1852.
9 Margaret Burton Ferrier born circa 1822 died 17 Oct 1859 at Bangor and was buried at
Powerscourt demesne.
