Alexander was importing silk into Ireland in 1874/75. He married Janet Leckie Black on
22 Apr 1775 at Paisley, Scotland. Janet died at Willow Park, Booterstown, the home of her son
James on 14 Dec 1844 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
1 James Ferrier born 30 Mar 1776 in Paisley, Scotland married Isabella Pollock, daughter of
the late James Pollock of Maxwelltown, Paisley on 13 May 1815 in Glasgow. From 1809 he
was a silk merchant of 56 Fishamble Street in partnership with his brother Alexander
Ferrier and his brother in law James Pollock and they lived at Willow Park from 1823. His
widowed mother Janet Leckie died at Willow Park on 14 Dec 1844 aged 88. He was a life
member of the RDS from 1833 and a director of the Bank of Ireland. He was also a director
of the National Assurance Company and the Dublin-Kingstown railway, a committee member
of the Kildare Place Society, and the Hibernian Bible Society, and a director of Mount Jerome
cemetery.
In 1832 Messrs Ferrier and Pollock purchased Powerscourt House which was the government’s
old Stamp office at 59 William Street for £5000, (now known as the Powerscourt Townhouse
Centre). He was an elder of the Presbyterian Church of Mary’s Abbey. James along with his
gardener Thomas Austin won numerous prizes for their vegetables including asparagus, York
Cabbage and Seakale and Isabella won prizes for fruit including black and white grapes and
apricots. James died at Willow Park 2 May 1851 aged 75 and Isabella died 17 Jan 1856 at
Willow Park. Both were buried at Mount Jerome. After Isabella’s death the house was put up
sale and James’ library of 1400 books was also auctioned.
1 Anabella Ferrier, eldest daughter born circa 1817 married Peter Roe Clarke of Baggot
Street on 7 Sep 1837 at Booterstown Church.
2 Alexander James Ferrier, eldest son born circa 1818 returned to Ireland in 1842 after a
tour of the continent. He married Barbara Breen, second daughter of Patrick Breen of
Castle Bridge at Monkstown Church on 27 Nov 1845. A second ceremony was held at
Longford Terrace. He was elected a life member of the RDS in 1838. He was a partner in
the firm of Ferrier and Pollock. He was a trustee of the manufactures exhibition in 1863
and was on the committee of Portobello Gardens. They lived at 69 Leeson street where
Barbara died on 27 Feb 1853. He was a member of the Philharmonic Society and was
appointed a JP in 1864. He also won prizes with the RHS with gardener Thomas Austin.
Alex James died 31 Dec 1868 at 69 Upper Leeson Street. He left 10K in personal estate
which was shared by his siblings.
3 James Charles Ferrier, second son born circa 1822 joined the 10h Hussars. He married
Matilda Long, third daughter of Robert Long of Pembroke Road at St Peter’s Church
Dublin on 1 Mar 1849. James died at Eglington Park, Kingstown 3 Jan 1862 and left
personal estate of £300. Matilda died at Adelaide Street, Kingstown on 12 Jan 1887 and
left personal estate of £1100. Both were buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Elizabeth Janet Louise Ferrier eldest daughter born 11 Dec 1849 at 27 Pembroke
Place married William Robert Crawford of Co Clare and son of John Crawford at
Monkstown Church on 11 Jul 1876.
2 James Charles Ferrier born at Willow Tce in May 1851 died at Natal on 26 Nov 1877
aged 26 and is remembered on the family vault at Mount Jerome.
3 Daughter Ferrier born 20 Mar 1853 at Wilton Terrace.
4 Robert Ferrier younger son born 20 Feb 1854 at Booterstown married Kate Harrington
25 Apr 1905 at the Church of St Alban the Martyr, Southend on Sea.
4 John Pollock Ferrier, third son, married Marianne, eldest daughter of James Turbett of
Owenstown House on 6 Nov 1844 at Taney Church. John died 29 Nov 1873 leaving a
Widow and three children.
