Joseph Verschoyle was the son of Henry Verschoyle and Martha Esktrigg of Dublin who
married 21 Aug 1703. John was born in 1709, attended Trinity and became a Freeman of
the City in 1746. He was a JP for Dublin and a governor of the Blue Coat Hospital (school).
He married Martha Nottley at St Audeon's Parish on 8 Dec 1744 and had at least six
children. He died in May 1796.
1 Rt Rev James Verschoyle born 1750 attended Trinity, he was Archdeacon of
Glendalough before becoming Lord Bishop of Killala and Achonry. He married
Frances Walsh 8 Apr 1790. Frances died 14 Jun 1822 and James died 13 Apr 1824.

2 Richard Verschoyle of Mount Merrion was a Dublin Protestant merchant and
High Sheriff of Dublin for 1819. He married Barbara Fagan, daughter of Bryan
Fegan on 8 Sept 1790 at St Audeon's Parish. Barbara was land agent to the
Fitwilliam family as her family had been for a number of generations. Richard
died at Brighton on 27 Aug 1827. His body was repatriated and he was buried in
a vault at SS Philip & John of Booterstown where there is also a memorial plaque.
Barbara died intestate on 25 Jan 1837 and was buried in the Roman Catholic
church of Booterstown. They had no children.
3 John Verschoyle of Stillorgan Park was a Dublin Protestant merchant. Born in
in 1752 he married Henrietta the daughter of William Preston and Angel Archdale on
16 Jul 1782.
1 Ven Joseph Verchoyle baptised at St Audeons on 20 May 1783. He was
Archdeacon of Achonry and married his cousin Frances, only daughter of the
Rev James Verschoyle and Frances Walsh on 4 Jul 1813. Joseph died
30 May 1863.
2 William Verschoyle baptised at St Audeons 27 Jan 1786 died unmarried.
John secondly married heiress Margaret the daughter of Hamilton and Margaret
Stuart of Dromespill, County Tyrone on 2 Jun 1802. She was of Royal descent
being related to Robert II, King of Scotland. They lived at Stillorgan House from 1803 to
1840. He was church warden of Stillorgan parish in 1821 and died 28 Jun 1840 and is
buried at Stillorgan graveyard.
3 Hamilton Verschoyle of Castleshanaghan, Co Donegal was born April 1803 and took
Holy orders. He made sketches of Stillorgan in 1824, some of which are held by the
National Library of Ireland. He married heiress Catherine Margaret daughter of the
Very Rev Thomas Hawkins, Dean of Clonfert in 1833. He became Lord Bishop of
Kilmore, Elphin and Ardagh in 1863. Hamilton died on 29 Jan 1870 at Torquay and
was buried at Brighton.
4 Matilda Verschoyle married the twice widowed Rev Rawdon Griffith Greene at
Sandgate in Kent on 10 May 1844. Rawdon was incumbent of Stillorgan from
1815 to 1839.
5 John James Verschoyle of Tassagart, Saggart Co Dublin born 26 Jul 1805 married
Catherine Helen the daughter of William Henry Foster, Rector of Loughgilly,
Co Antrim and niece to John Foster, Lord Oriel, last speaker of the Irish House of
Commons who lived at Merville (UCD) on 12 Mar 1849. John died 6 Aug 1891 and
Catherine died 14 Mar 1901. Both were buried at Rathcoole.
1 Rev John Stuart Verschoyle born 1854 attended Pembroke College Cambridge.
2 William Henry Foster Verschoyle was born in 1860 and lived at Woodley
Park House Stillorgan. He married Frances Harriet Hamilton, the daughter of
James Jackson of Upwell Co Norfolk and The Priory, St Andrews in Fife on
16 Jun 1888. Frances was born in France and was the widow of Captain
Unett of the 21st Hussars. William was a solicitor and land agent to the
Verschoyles and to the Governors of St Patrick's Hospital estates at Saggart.
William was appointed a JP and was a trustee of The Coombe Hospital. He
hosted the Dundrum Horticultural Show in 1910. Frances died on 14 Dec 1924
at their townhouse 19 Fitzwilliam Square. In 1925 he claimed for malicious
damage to the Stewards House at Kilbery Athy where he sometimes resided.
1 George John Foster Verschoyle born 13 Mar 1889 at Carysfort Lodge took
Holy orders. He was curate of St George's Dublin from 1915 to 1925. He
married Frediswilde Frances Hornidge at St Mary's, Frensham, in Surrey on
25 Mar 1925. He was licensed curate-assistant of Taney parish in 1925 and
Ardamine in 1930. He became the incumbent of Ardamine & Kiltennal in
1935 and Rural Dean in 1940. He died 11 Sep 1954 at the Rectory, Adamine.
2 William Arthur (Arti) Verschoyle born 24 Sep 1890 at Woodley Park House
was educated at Marlborough College and passed out of Sandhurst College
in 1912. He joined the British army and was posted to India. He attained the
rank of Captain with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles. He was killed
11 April 1917 age 26 at the battle of Arras.
3 Kathleen Laura Verschoyle born 7 Jul 1892 at Woodley Park House married the
Rev William Kyle Patrick Hogan son of the Rev Frederic Hogan at St Stephen's
Church on 6 Oct 1932. William was assistant master at Dean Close 'School,
Cheltenham and curate at Bournemouth and Chingford before being appointed
to Horsford. He died at The Vicarage, Horsford in Norfolk on 31 Aug 1949 and
left 6k in personal estate.
4 Francis Stuart (Frank) Verschoyle born 9 Apr 1896 at Woodley Park House
joined the British army. He was a 2nd Lieutenant with the Royal Engineers
and was killed Sunday 25 Apr 1915 age 19 near Ypres. He is commemorated
on the war memorial and Verschoyle in Christ Church, Trinity College and
Marlborough College in Wiltshire.
William secondly married Winifred Mabel Letts, author and poet on 5 May 1926 at St
Stephen's Church, Dublin. She was the daughter of Ernest Frederick Letts (1850-1904)
and Mary Isabel Ferrier (1848-1933). She was the granddaughter of Alexander Ferrier
and Euphemia Laurie of Knockmaroon, Chapelizod and spend periods of her childhood
living with them. Her paternal grandfather was Thomas Letts from Blackgang, Isle of
Wight. She attended Alexandra College Dublin and worked as a VAD at the Western
General in Manchester. She was living at Dal Riada, Stillorgan at the time of her
marriage. William died 26 Dec 1943 aged 65 at 19 Fitzwilliam Square and was buried
at Rathcoole with his parents. Winifred went to England after his death, on her return
to Dublin, she settled in Ballybrack and died on 7 Jun 1972 at Tivoli Nursing Home, Dun
Laoghaire. She was buried with her husband.
3 Helen Catherine Verschoyle married Moutray Gledstones of Fardross, Co Tyrone in
1874.
4 Margaret Stuart Verschoyle married the Rev Duncan John Brownlow in 1883.
5 Lily Sarah Wilhelmina Verschoyle married the Rev Richard Stuart Dobbs Campbell on
28 Jan 1880 at St Anne's Church, Dublin. Rev Campbell was Dean of Clonmacnoise and
Rector of Athlone and died 8 Mar 1913. Lily died 26 May 1924 age 67 at Fitzwilliam
Square.
6 Catherine Matilda Frances Verschoyle married Shuldham Henry Shaw of Ravenswell,
Bray in 1882.
