Foster family of Abilene
Hon John Leslie Foster born circa 1781 Dunleer educated TCD, 1st son of Rev William Foster, Bishop
of Clogher and Catherine Letitia Leslie daughter of Rev Henry Leslie of Ballibay, Monaghan. He
married Letitia Vesey-Fitzgerald daughter of James Fitzgerald of Inchicronan, Clare in 1814. He was
appointed Baron of the Court of Exchequer of Ireland on 16 July 1830. Letitia as the sister of Lord
Fitzgerald and Vesci assumed the surname of Foster Vesey Fitzgerald in 1860.

1 William Vesey Leslie Foster 1st son born 12.07.1815 educated TCD and married Sarah
Anne Quilter daughter of Henry Quilter on 27.04.1847. William was a Justice of the Peace
and lived at Moyvane, Kerry and Rugby, Warwickshire. William died on 07.05.1895 aged
79 years and Sarah died on 15.09.1899 both at Rugby.

2 Gerald William Foster Vesey Fitzgerald born 25.3.1850 and died 27.11.1928.
3 Henry Martin Foster Vesey Fitzgerald born 01.04.1852 and died 28.06.1924.
2 Rt Hon John Vesey-Fitzgerald Foster 2nd son born 19.08.1818. In 1841 he emigrated to
Victoria, New South Wales and sat in the Sydney Parliament until 1849. John married Emily
Fletcher eldest daughter of Rev J J Fletcher Rector of Castlemacadam and Ballydonnell on
13.09.1851 at Nun’s Cross, Church. Emily died on 28.11.1899 and John died on 03.01.1900
at 3 Philbeach Gardens, South Kensington.
3 Letitia Geraldine Foster baptised 21.11.1819 at St Mark’s Church, Dublin. Letitia was living at
89 Baggot Street in 1911 with her unmarried nephew James. Letitia only daughter of Baron
Foster died unmarried on 23.11.1908 aged 88 years at 86 Lower Baggot Street and is buried
at Mount Jerome.
4 James Thomas Leslie Foster born 08.05.1821 baptised at St Mary’s Church, Dublin. James
married Henrietta Louisa Mahon daughter of Ross Mahon on 04.12.1845 at 22 St
Stephen’s Green in the Parish of St Anne, Dublin. John was his father's executer. They had
various addresses in Dublin during the 1850's and lived at Abilene, Galloping Green circa
1851. James took over from his father as land agent to Sir Frederick Foster at the Killanny
estate in Co Louth in 1842. He was JP for Bray in 1858 and later JP, DL and High Sheriff for
He assumed the name James Foster Vesey Fitzgerald in 1864 and moved to Moyriesk in Co
Co Clare. Henrietta died on 10.12.1893 aged 73 years and James died later that same day

James graduated Trinity and was called to the bar in 1871. He was KC and JP of
Moyriesk, Clare and was author of A Practical Guide to the Valuation of Rent in
Ireland (Dublin, 1881). He died unmarried on 06.04.1907 aged 62 years at the
University Club Stephens Green late of 89 Lower Baggot Street, Dublin and is
buried at Mount Jerome.
2 Henrietta Marie Emily Foster born 6 Dec 1847 at Mountjoy Square married George
Augustus Barrington Godbold of the 12th Regiment son of George Shute Barrington
Godbold on 29.09.1870 at Quin Parish Church, Clare. Henrietta died on 24.12.1877
in Deolalee, Bombay, India.
3 Captain John George Foster born 26 Sep 1850 at 18 Eccles Street resigned his
commission in 1884. He fatally shot himself with a revolver on 11.07.1892 aged 43
years at the residence of his father at Moyriesk.
4 Geraldine Sophia Foster born 09.11.1852 at Fitzgibbon Street. Geraldine married
Robert Hume Crowe JP of Toonagh, Clare in November 1872. Robert died on
14.06.1907 at Toonagh and Geraldine died 18.03.1932 aged 84 years at 28 Upper
Merrion Street late of O’Callaghans Mills, Clare.
5 Charles Albert Leslie Foster born 12.07.1822 baptised at St Mary’s Church, Dublin. Charles
drowned on 24.05.1841 while bathing near his father’s residence Oriel Temple, Louth.
6 Edward Ross Leslie Foster baptised circa 12.07.1826 at St Mary’s Church, Dublin. Edward of
the Bengal Civil Service died of cholera on 23.05.1846 aged 20 years in Calcutta.
