Rumour has it that the General Register Office (GRO) is to launch it's BMD indexes online on the www.irishgenealogy site.

Back in 2014 the plan was for the following to happen:- 
"Visitors will be able to search records from a number of on-line sources including the historic Indexes to the Civil Registers of Births, Marriages and Deaths, the Church Records already available on www.irishgenealogy.ie, and others such as the 1901 and 1911 Census and Soldiers wills, to name but a few." 1938-1964 Electoral registers are removed from Heritage Database at the Dublin City Airchives 


1908-1915 registers survived the cull so I can only suppose that the DPC have imposed a 100 year rule.  The register lists a name and an address and genealogists or those researcing their family history usually use to verify an address and an age (you had to be over 21 to vote).

Not sure how this infomation would be used by frausters, which is the normal reason for this type of information to be taken down.  

​According to Dublin City Archives "At this stage we do not have any plans to put online parts of the database again."

Genealogy firm is the first recipient of Ludgate fund
THE recipient of the first seed capital fund to a Ludgate company was announced at the launch of the digital hub in Skibbereen.
A total seed capital fund of €300,000 was revealed in May, when Ludgate steering group member Sean O’Driscoll, president of Glen Dimplex, agreed to match the €150,000 fund donated by local businessman Maurice Healy of The Healy Group. The Healy Group, a €100m-turnover company, is a major global distributor of chemicals and food ingredients.
Last Friday both Sean O’Driscoll and Maurice Healy announced on stage at the Ludgate launch that the first company to benefit from the fund would be a genealogy company called Your Irish Heritage.
‘I have no doubt this firm will be a success,’ Maurice Healy told The Southern Star, adding that news of funding for a further two companies was imminent.
Enterprise Ireland have also expressed an interest in coming on board with some funding for companies which make the grade for the seed capital fund, the Ludgate launch was told.
Your Irish Heritage is an online media and education company with a focus on Ireland’s diaspora around the world.
It is run by Mike and Carina Collins who, in May, relocated the business from Cork City to the Ludgate Hub in Skibbereen.
‘Our prime focus is on Irish Genealogy at the moment, and we have over 1,200 paying subscribers to our online platform, where we employ Irish genealogists to help people of Irish descent to locate their ancestral homelands and houses,’ said Mike.
The site sends out a letter every Sunday morning to over 20,000 people in the USA, Canada, Australia and the UK – and has now sent out over 1.2 million letters, and published two books as a result.
The company has also just announced that it is recruiting new employees in the West Cork area. ‘We are also bringing our four-day conference, with 150 attendees from the US, Canada, the UK and Australia, to Skibbereen for the first time,’ added Mike.

Today, the National Library of Ireland presented the Art Palace of Georgia with 16 unique historical documents that had been preserved in the library.
 
The documents consist of royal correspondence letters attributed to two famous monarchs that ruled over the British Isles: Henry the VIII (r. 1509-1547) and Elizabeth I (r. 1558-1603).
 
Apparently, both of these royal figures shared a keen interest in Georgian affairs and so commanded their ambassadors in Constantinople to send them extraordinary correspondence meticulously detailing the matters-at-hand in the Kartl-Kakheti and Samegrelo provinces.
 
Each of the documents is handwritten and all were unknown to Georgian society to date. Some of the letters are written in Latin, and the remainder in English.
 
The project that aims to transfer the copies of the unknown English and Irish documents dedicated to Georgia to the Arts Palace (State Museum of Theater, Music, Cinema & Choreography, Kargareteli Str. 6) is being carried out through the support of Ambassador of Georgia in the Republic of Ireland, Giorgi Zurabishvili, and embassy representative, Natia Kalandia.
 
Additionally, this year, Cartu Fund funded a project that aims to translate and research such historic documents. The project will ensure that in the near future, hundreds of European documents about Georgia, dated from the 16th to 18th century, will become accessible for researchers and scholars alike.

Janet Davies, Royal College of Nursing Chief Executive and General Secretary, explores the new nursing register collection and shines a spotlight on the record of one of the RCN’s founders, Sarah Swift.


"The Nursing Registers are an incredibly significant collection – especially as they have been digitised during the Royal College of Nursing’s centenary year. Typically, professional registers are predominately male, but at 1.6 million records, this is one of the largest collections of mostly female records.

Nursing, circa 1930s Nurse registration in the UK began on 30 September 1921.Prior to this, registers of nurses were held by individual hospitals and were not consistent. One of the RCN’s first campaigns was for the standardisation of the nursing registers.
As such, this collection will add to the ongoing study of nursing and women’s history and allow interested researchers to find out more about those who were working in nursing from the point it became an established profession. It will also allow individuals to find out about the lives and contributions made by their family members.

​A look into the records

The RCN’s founder, Sarah Swift, can be found in this new trove of digitised records. As her record shows, she was trained in the Dundee Royal Infirmary and received her certificate in nursing in 1880. By 1909, she had retired as the matron of Guy’s Hospital. Her extensive experience and contacts with the matrons of large and prestigious hospitals meant that she was ideally placed to champion the formation of the College of Nursing.
She founded the College, which later became the Royal College of Nursing, in 1916 in partnership with Arthur Stanley MP. He shared her vision to promote high standards in nursing. They were driven to do so by the experience of World War One, when many women acted as nurses without formal training or regulation. Sarah Swift has been described as a tireless worker. She referred to the foundation of the RCN as one of her “off jobs” done outside work. She was made a Dame in 1919 for her wartime work.

Great Famine victims’ teeth contain evidence of starvationScientists make breakthrough by studying the remains of victims of Irish potato blight.Scientific evidence of starvation has been extracted from the teeth of people who died in the Famine in the 19th-century.
It is the first time analysis of the stable isotopes of nitrogen and carbon in human teeth has been used to establish markers for starvation.
Some of the individuals studied by Julia Beaumont of the University of Bradford and Janet Montgomery of Durham University had survived earlier periods of famine before the Great Famine of 1845-52, when the Irish potato crop on which the poor were dependent totally failed in successive years.
Others died of malnutrition after trying to survive on a diet of imported American maize, the main ingredient distributed in food aid, and used for most workhouse meals.
The researchers’ analysis suggests that the changing levels of nitrogen and carbon have been wrongly interpreted in the past, when they were seen as indicators of a high-status rich diet.
In fact, their grim discovery is that it is really evidence of body tissue breaking down and being recycled, as the starving human literally consumes itself.
