How to order an English or Welsh birth, marriage or death certificate

Civil registration of births, marriages and deaths started in 1837 in England and Wales. They aren't online so you need to order certificates via the General Record Office (GRO) for £9.25 each.  Birth, marriage and death certificates are an essential part of family history and anyone exploring their family's past will reach a point where they need to order one. Civil registration for England and Wales started in 1837 and you can order copies of certificates via the General Record Office (GRO) by following our six simple steps.

ALT LAKE CITY — Genealogy enthusiasts will travel to Salt Lake the early part of February to take part in this year's RootsTech, the biggest family history conference in the world.
Conference officials recently announced musical guests and keynote speakers who will entertain audiences the first week of February.
The Crescent Super Band and Ryan Innes will join together in an exclusive performance at the opening social Feb. 4, according to RootsTech.
The Crescent Super Band has often been called one of the best professional bands in the world. Ryan Innes has previously performed on NBC's "The Voice."
On Feb. 5, David Isay, the award-winning radio producer and founder of StoryCorps, will address event goers, and Michael Leavitt, who previously served in the Cabinet of George W. Bush, will speak Feb. 6.

Isay has obtained six Peabody Awards and a MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship. He was recently awarded the rare TED prize for his work with StoryCorps, "an award-winning organization that provides people of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve their life stories," according to RootsTech.
Leavitt is the founder and chairman of the health consultancy group Leavitt Partners.
Doris Kearns Goodwin, a presidential historian and author, will join Leavitt as a keynote speaker Feb. 6.
Additional conference keynote speakers include lifestyle bloggers Naomi and Josh Davis, well-known author Bruce Feiler, Chairman and CEO of Madison Media Management LLC Paula Williams Madison and Steve Rockwood, president and CEO of FamilySearch International.
The Lower Lights, another musical group, will also perform Feb. 6. The group has been together for five years and has three gospel albums and two Christmas albums.

The Honorable Albinia Brodrick: from English Aristocrat to Irish Revolutionary Republican.

As part of the Cork County Council 1916 Centenary Commemoration programme a public lecture will take place in Midleton Library on Saturday 16th January.
The Hon. Albinia Brodrick (sometimes incorrectly called Lady Brodrick) was born into the English aristocratic Brodrick family, the absentee landlords of Midleton in County Cork. Brought up in a firmly Unionist milieu she supported her family’s commitment to preserving the Union between Britain and Ireland and their rejection of Home Rule for Ireland. This stance was so pronounced that as a young woman she read the newspaper to her partially blind father, William, 8th Viscount Midleton, but only on the stipulation that she never read out William Gladstone’s name whenever it was mentioned in the news reports. Gladstone, of course, tried to pacify Ireland with various Home Rule proposals but nothing came of this endeavour.

Extremely well educated privately, and well travelled, Albinia later acted as hostess to her uncle who was Warden of Merton College, Oxford. At some point in the early 20th century Albinia underwent an extraordinary change in her political, social and national loyalties. First, she trained as a nurse and became a staunch advocate of reform in nursing education – especially in training nurses to deal with venereal disease. Then she became interested in the condition of the Irish rural poor, particularly in the Caherdaniel are of County Kerry, where she established a hospital to provide improved treatment for local people. But her most radical change was to identify herself entirely with Ireland – she learned to speak Irish, changed her name to Gobnait Ni Brudair. Albinia went further by becoming a radical Irish republican, supporting the 1916 Easter Rising, opposing the Treaty of 1921, supporting the Anti-Treaty forces during the Civil War. During this time, Albinia’s brother, William St John Fremantle Brodrick, 9th Viscount Midleton, was the leader of the Southern Unionists -a very different group from the Ulster Unionists.

Albinia died in relative poverty in 1955 and was buried in the Church of Ireland graveyard in Sneem, County Kerry. She left her property to the members of the old IRA – but in fact the true heirs could not be identified by the High Court in Dublin. The lecture will illustrate Albinia Brodrick’s life and radicalism.
The 1916 Centenary Commemorative lecture will take place at Midleton Library on Saturday 16th January at 12.00 noon. All are welcome.

We are delighted to partner with the Accredited Genealogists Ireland (AGI) for this series of lectures for Adult Learners’ Week 2016.
22 February - 26 February at 1pm each day
Members of AGI will present a lecture introducing  genealogical sources that might be used to document ancestors who were alive in 1916 or who were active during the Rising. While the sources will be discussed in the context of the Rising, they are not all exclusive to that period or specifically for Dublin City.
The programme of lectures that will be presented are as follows:

2.       Reporting on the Rising: Using Irish Newspapers in the National Library of Ireland
3.       Census Returns, Electoral Rolls and Covenants: Where were your  ancestors in 1916?

5.       Researching the Rising: a case study from the National Archives of Ireland
