Frederick Fitzjohn Trench born 10 Oct 1808, eldest son of John Trench of St Catherine’s Park Co
Kildare and Jean Currie. He was the nephew of Lord Ashtown and took Holy orders. He married
Elizabeth Maconchy on 6 Apr 1838 at Raheny. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Maconchy of
Edenmore, Co Dublin and his wife Deborah King. He was rector of Carlow for ten years from
1848 and a prebendary of St Patricks Cathedral by 1856. He was appointed rector of Staplestown
in August 1858 and died at The Rectory, Staplestown on 25 Jun 1859.
1 John Alfred Trench eldest son born 5 Feb 1839 was educated at the Rev Dr Pownall’s
school at Athy Road, Carlow. He married Janetta Wilbraham Taylor on 25 May 1866 at
Hadley, Barnet. Janetta was the eldest daughter of Wilbraham Taylor of Hadley Hurst
Barnet, near London and Janetta Goset. John died 28 Mar 1922. Janetta was the writer
of many hymns and also compiled a book of children’s hymns called ‘Our Own’. She died
at Winscales House, Workington, Cumberland on 14 Jun 1925 aged 82.
1 Evelyn Wilbraham Trench born 10 Nov 1871 in Barnet was unmarried living at
Winscales House in 1939 and died on 2 Jun 1942 at Wokingham.
2 Wilbraham Fitzjohn Trench only son born 1 Mar 1873 at 14 Upper Leeson Street
married Mary Alicia Cross on 29 Dec 1903 at Gloucester. Mary was the eldest
daughter of Edward Cross of Hollywood, Co Down. He was a professor of history
and English literature at Queen’s College Galway. He was appointed chair of English
literature in TCD in 1913 and the family moved first to Blessington, Co Wicklow, and
then to Dublin. He was president of the British Empire Shakespeare Society. They
were living at 26 Clyde Road in 1921, in Woodview in 1922 and were living at
Grianblah, Palmerston Park by 1929. Mary died 3 Feb 1930 and was buried at
Mount Jerome. Wilbraham died on 14 Jul 1939 at Palmerston Park and was buried
with his wife.
1 Patrick (Paddy) Mackenzie Fitzjohn Trench born 16 Jan 1905 at Ardmore,
Galway attended Trinity and the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. He was
an artist and had his first solo exhibition in Dublin in 1927 and exhibited at
the Bloomsbury Gallery in London in 1935. That same year he won a
commission to paint a mural for a well known restaurant in Chelsea. He
married Frances Cautley Baker, a fellow artist on 29 Jul 1926 at St Philip's
Church, Milltown, the marriage was dissolved in 1930 and Frances married
Michael Farrell and ran Crock of Gold Crafts. Patrick secondly married Eve
Hayden at Holborn in 1930. He had a relationship with Barbara Nicholson
and then married Winifred Frances Stidolph in 1947. He was a member of
the Independent Labour Party, a self-professed Marxist and Trotskyist. He
suffered from TB and in 1947 a funder raiser was organised by Arland Ussher
and Dr Owen Skeffington to defray the costs of a sanatorium. Victor
Waddington arranged an auction of donated rare books, paintings and
sketches at his gallery in South Anne Street. Included was a sketch of ‘The
head of a man’ by Sir William Orpen. Patrick died 27 Feb 1948 in Switzerland.
2 Sheila (Sheela) Wilbraham Trench born 9 Mar 1907 at Ardmore Galway
married Diarmid Coffey, a barrister on 15 Aug 1929 at St Philip’s Church,
Milltown. Diarmuid was a widower and had previously been married to
Cesca Trench, a cousin of Sheela. He was also a crew member of the Kelpie,
which offloaded arms at Kilcoole, Co Wicklow in 1914.
3 Jean Martha Netta Fitzjohn (Shamrock) Trench born 20 Dec 1908 at
Ardmore Galway was a talented vocalist, pianist and amateur actress. She
was the first female to earn her Pilot's Certificate in the Irish Free State in
1931. She was engaged to Bovay Parry in 1934 but married Charles Greene
in 1937 at Brentford. She secondly married Count Andre Dudley Metaxa and
thirdly married Hugh Crichton Roberts.
4 Chalmers (Terry) Edward Fitzjohn Trench born 27 Nov 1909 at Ardmore,
Galway educated at Baymount Dublin and Repton College, England. He
married Beatrice (Bea) Orpen, a painter and art teacher on 5 Jul 1940 at
Tullow Church. Beatrice was the daughter of Charles St George Orpen. He
was author and businessman having been manager at both Three Candles
Press McCann and Hill a milling business in Drogheda. He was an Irish
language enthusiast and was a founder member of An Óige in 1931 with
Thekla Beere. He was an office-holder of An Taisce and founded the
Drogheda branch of the Irish Film Society. Terry and Beatrice established a
municipal art gallery in Drogheda.
3 Ada Wilbraham Trench born 10 Oct 1876 at 5 St James’ Terrace, Clonskeagh was the
publisher of a magazine in Braille with scriptural themes. She was unmarried living at
Winscales House in 1939 and died in 1959.
4 Gertrude Wilbraham Trench born 7 Oct 1880 at 5 St James’s Terrace, Clonskeagh,
unmarried living at Winscales House in 1939. She died in Wokington on 29 Feb 1956.
