George was a carpenter of Newtown Park and the son of John and Margaret Thornton, a gardener from
Newtown Park. He married Ellen Cullen daughter of James Cullen, a labourer of Newtown Park at All
Saints, Carysfort Avenue. They moved to Mount Merrion cottages and had 16 children, only 10 were
still living in 1911. George was a gardener/workman on the Mount Merrion estate from about 1892 to
1915 working for Sir Nevile Wilkinson and his wife Lady Beatrix Herbert. He died at Mount Merrion on
30 Dec 1924 and was buried in Deansgrange. Ellen died 27 Apr 1935 at Kilmacud Road, Mount Merrion
and was buried at Kilgobbin.*

Road married Ann (Annie) Henderson daughter of John Henderson at the RC Church of St
Laurence's on 13 Oct 1901. James was working as a coachman at Burton Hall.
1 Ellen Thornton born 18 Nov 1906 at Stillorgan was living with the Henderson family
in 1911.
2 John Joseph Thornton born 23 Mar 1908 at Kilmacud.
3 Eliza Thornton born 4 Jun 1876 at Newtown Park. She was a servant and died a spinster on
29 Oct 1918 from influenza at the Richmond Asylum and was buried at Deansgrange.
4 Alfred Thornton born 20 Jun 1879 at Newtown Park died at Newtown Park on 28 Dec 1880 and
was buried at Deansgrange.
5 Margaret Thornton born 18 Jan 1885 at Newtown Park.
6 George Thornton born 13 Jul 1886 at Newtown Park. He was a labourer of Neilstown and
married Alice Campbell, a laundress and daughter of John Campbell, a dairyman at St Kevin's
Church, Harrington Road on 28 Feb 1911. George died at Dromartin Cottages on 23 Jul 1945 and
was buried at Deansgrange. Alice died at 12 Drumartin Cottages, Goatstown on 24 Sep 1966 and
was buried with her husband.

Park in 1945.

7 John Thornton born 7 Sep 1887 a workman married Elizabeth (Lizzy) Jane Morgan at Kill Parish
Church on 29 Jun 1907 by the Rector of Stillorgan. Elizabeth born 12 Apr 1884 was a housemaid
in Mount Merrion House and was living at Belmont Terrace Stillorgan at the time of her marriage.
They were living at Goatstown in 1911. John died at 4 Drummartin Cottages on 17 Aug 1946.
1 Ivan George Thornton born 8 Oct 1907 at Westbury Lodge died 2 Dec 1907 at
Goatstown.
2 Albert Ernest Thornton born 4 Nov 1908 at Neilstown, Kilmacud was baptised at
Stillorgan Parish Church. He married Mary White on 8 Feb 1937 at RC Church,
Blackrock. Albert was working as a builders labourer and Mary was the daughter
of John White and was living at 19 St Anne's Square, Blackrock.
3 Hubert John Thornton was born 5 Dec 1909 at Neilstown, Kilmacud at baptised at
Stillorgan Parish Church never married and was buried with his parents at Deansgrange.
4 James Henry Thornton was born 28 May 1913 at Neilstown, Kilmacud and baptised at
Stillorgan Parish Church.
5 Donald William Thornton was born 19 May 1914 at Neilstown, Kilmacud and
baptised at Stillorgan Parish Church married Bridget Delaney on 4 Oct 1939. Bridget
was the daughter of James Delaney, an engineer and working at Nullamore in Milltown.
Donald was a chauffeur living at 144 Rathgar Road.
8 Hubert (Herbert) Thornton 27 Oct 1889 at Newtown Park baptised as St Brigid’s Church,
Stillorgan. Hubert, a gardener married Bridget Tallon of Deansgrange, the daughter of
William Tallon, a gardener at the RC church of Cabinteely on 16 Feb 1915. They lived at 243
Deansgrange. Bridget died aged 23 on 23 Jun 1918 and was buried at Deansgrange with her
son.

2 William Thornton born 3 Mar 1918 at Deansgrange died aged 5 weeks on 1 Apr 1918
and was buried at Deansgrange.
Hubert secondly married Margaret Sheridan a servant of Roebuck Hill at Kilmacud Church on
2 Jun 1920 and had at least five children. Margaret was the daughter of Patrick Sheridan, a
farmer.

at St Brigid’s Stillorgan.
10 Albert Thornton born 8 Nov 1894 at Mount Merrion Cottage, Kilmacud Road baptised at

11 Ellen Thornton born 29 May 1895 baptised at Stillorgan Parish Church.
12 Isabella (Bella) Thornton born 2 Sep 1896 baptised at Stillorgan Parish Church married Albert
Davidson, a gardener from Goatstown and son of James Davidson at Stillorgan Parish Church
on 11 Jul 1922.
13 Jane Thornton born 9 Feb 1898 at Mount Merrion Cottages, Kilmacud Road baptised at
Stillorgan Parish Church. Jane married Joseph Kinch of Blackrock on 3 Aug 1919 at the
RC Church of Kilmacud. Joseph was a motorman and the couple are thought to have had
eight children. The family moved to Ballinteer Park and Joseph died there in 1971. Both Joseph
and Jane are buried at Deansgrange.*
